Highly recommend. Works out to less than $100 per kit including shipping both ways, if you order 2+ kits. Otherwise it’s about $102 for a single kit.

I would say for most people it's just curiosity knowing where the family history comes from.

The test gives you an estimated percentage breakdown of where you have ancestry from e.g 20% Irish, 20% Māori etc. You’ll most likely also get at least one “ancestral journey”, which indicates your most recent ancestry, e.g I have “New Zealand, European & British Settlers”. You also get a list of “matches” which consists of all the other people who have taken the test that you share DNA with. Most of them are extremely distant (I have about 20K now, found out I’m distantly related to a girl I went to school with lol), but if you have any closer relatives they will show up too. A lot of people actually find relatives they weren’t aware of, so that’s a possibility to keep in mind.
Those are the two main parts of the test. You can also buy a subscription for additional features like access to historical records, family trees, chromosome painter etc. but that stuff is all optional. I would recommend checking the AncestryDNA subreddit to see a lot of example results and get a better idea of how it works.

How did you know that one of your 'matches' was for a girl you went to school with?
Did they disclose her details to you?

Because of the name. Plus her profile picture is the same as Facebook, so that confirmed it.

@Waverley: Wow! So I guess that, by paying them, you also give them permission to share you name and profile photo?

@Alan6984: You choose what you share… you can opt just for your initials, or any name, plus a profile picture isn’t required. You can also choose to opt out of matches altogether and just get the ancestry estimate (can turn matches on later if desired.) What would be the use in saying you match with 20 thousand people, but not giving any basic info like their names?

Is it worth getting the Traits Kit?

Not really imo, it just tells you random stuff like whether you’re supposedly likely to own a pet, likely to enjoy sports, likely to have gotten all four wisdom teeth etc. kind of just a gimmicky add on which is very unreliable.

I got the DNA test only and they recently updated it so everyone can access certain traits for free. Paying more for the traits may give you even more I dunno?

One thing worth considering is that these companies usually retain your DNA. Some of them have faced financial trouble and have sold on customers’ details and DNA despite promising not to do so.
As more is discovered from DNA (eg. determining medical conditions, behavioural propensities and so on) the DNA info will become more valuable for them to sell on and you’ll have little control as to what it’s used for. Most people don’t care but I personally don’t trust them.
There’s been loads of news articles about this .. worth reading some of them before sharing your DNA, eg.
https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2024-10-21/testing-dna…
It’s some unholy level of privacy concerns.
People should think about their family members (they can be tracked through your DNA) before using it, as they hold onto all the DNA details and is happy to sell to others and share with law enforcement who can use it as a surveillance tool. Even for discriminatory and financially damaging way.
One of the bigger companies doing this (don't think it's this one) is also Israeli owned if that would influence your buying decision

Did this a few years back and the small swab cost $50 to send to USA as it is considered a parcel. So factor in that NZPost show a parcel under 500g is now $65.

Maybe it was a different company you used? AncestryDNA doesn’t use swabs, they give you a small tube to spit into. That or a person at NZ Post was misinformed. The shipping cost covers both the kit being sent to you and you posting it back. All you have to do is put your sample into the tiny box with a prepaid label provided (technically a box, but slim enough that it can be posted like a letter), then put it into one of the NZ Post international mailboxes. Did mine in 2023 and it got there fine.

I see it says + shipping, is this an add on cost to the purchase price?

The purchase price is 59 AUD per kit, shipping is 30 AUD for the first kit and then 10AUD for each additional kit.

Hey mate, could you enlighten me what would be the usefulness of having this? Is it just for curiosity or it could have more practical benefits?
