Mercury - Termination Fee - Warning

Mercury the power company is still attempting to charge termination fees despite their terms and conditions stating it won’t be applied.

I have had a run around from them and told repeatedly that they will charge me $300 despite their own emails and terms and conditions stating it won’t apply in my circumstance.

Please be careful, they have already had a court order and fine for this practice but still appear to be charging people.

Crooked as heck!

    No offense, but I never understood why people choose them in the first place. They're one of the priciest options out there.

      Many get sucked in by the "free" whiteware or electronics.

      Well it depends where you live, rates are different for everyone depending on location.

      I'm currently with Mercury, and have compared rates with 5 other power companies and Mercury is the cheapest.

      Currently paying 23.5c per kWh (anytime), and $2.30 daily rate.

      On top of that, just finished a 1 year contract where they offered $300 credit when signing up. So I've been hunting around and haven't been able to find another company offering better rates yet.

      • out of curiosity, where are you based? Have you tried power providers like Electric Kiwi that offer free energy at specific times?

        I'm currently with Octopus Energy:

        Daily charge = $1.38 /day

        Peak = $0.419865 /kWh
        Off-peak = $0.327865 /kWh
        Night = $0.20999 /kWh

        Averaging around 250~270 kWh per month.

        I haven't done a comparison in a while, so not sure if I can get this cheaper elsewhere or not. So far it seems alright. Most of my usage is off-peak or night.

        • Auckland, city fringe. I was with Electric Kiwi some years ago, did a quick check of their rates at my address, and it's higher than Mercury's.

          Perhaps my rates are due to increase after the 1 year contract has finished, not sure.

    • Charge type Current Prices New Prices
      Daily Fixed Charge ($/day) $2.67 $2.86
      Anytime ($/kWh) $0.22 $0.23
      Controlled ($/kWh) $0.16 $0.17

      Hamilton. I've been on a friends and family discount for 5+ years, whenever I've checked I've not seen anyone cheaper.

      • In Hamilton too. Contract ending in January (took advantage of six months free fibre)

        Charge type Current Prices New Prices
        Daily Fixed Charge ($/day) $1.50 $1.50
        Anytime ($/kWh) $0.2718 $0.296
        Controlled ($/kWh) $0.2136 $0.2337
        • Daily Fixed Charge ($/day) $1.725
          Weekday ($/kWh) $0.293
          Night ($/kWh) $0.2026
          With mercury for power, gas and Internet. Taking advantage of the 6 months free, too. They're not the cheapest for gas but it's pretty convenient having it all with them for now.

    Mercury is part of Utilities Dispute https://www.udl.co.nz/en/our-publications-and-schemes/provid… so I'd make a complaint there https://www.udl.co.nz/en/making-a-complaint/make-a-complaint… and probably tell the Commerce Commission once it's resolved hopefully in your favour. (To be clear, I'm in no way suggesting this makes it okay.)
