China Southern has flights to … wait for it… Kazakhstan! Very nice, high five!
All jokes aside, Almaty is a lovely city to visit, the Green Market is a must see, as well as going up the cable car for a look out. It's also a simple bus ride to Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, or train up to Astana. Tashkent is also a quick hop in a plane / bus ride. Source: I solo backpacked around these places several years ago, as part of an overland trip from London to Mongolia.
Note: be sure to get your visas in advance for the stans - some are easy, others…less so (Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan).
