One NZ - 30 Day Notice Period

Last August, I joined One NZ on the "Get $300 Credit with Unlimited Fibre Max Plan on a 12 Month Contract ($105/Month + $14.95 Modem Fee or BYO) @ One NZ" offer. The move was quite seamless from contact to One NZ.

Since its been >1 year, was thinking of moving elsewhere and whatsapp chat drops this:

"About the 30-day notice: if you’re transferring your broadband to a new provider, the notice period starts once your new service is active. "

Its like legally saying you can move to any provider, any date in October and we will keep charging you for one more month from there on.

How do you circumvent this??

That makes no sense at all, dispute that.

It states 30 days from the day you submit the request according to their own help page.
    https://one.nz/help/my-one-nz/cancel-an-account/

This seems a lot more reasonable.

    • True. I have asked for an escalation of this issue. Was offered a call back, so waiting.

  • I've never been double charged for internet - the new billing has always started the same day that the old one stopped.

However, if anyone was going to try this on, it would be Vodafone.

  • I've just moved away from One NZ, you can just call them to give them 30 days notice, I think there's a form to fill also. I did have to call again when I did switch as they hadn't done it properly or whatever then had to call again due to some other unnecessary charges.

  • Been a customer for 30 years on my mobile, also just received this yesterday which is very annoying. Who remembers such things after that long. I know I changed my account with tnem last year since old type was not going to be valid anymore…got a discount when I was going to cancel due to price rises. In this day and age 30 days notice eems ludicrous as they are barely doing anything with mobile change over. Did not think of giving notice and now my new account has just started with Electric Kiwi.

Dispute it and threaten to go to the ombudsman. They won't waive it but they will credit your account which amounts to the same thing.. Without them admitting fault.

  • Hey, so the 30-day notice period is actually legit, and unlikely to be legally challengeable.

As bigcheese has mentioned what it means is that One.NZ can keep charging you for 30 days from the day that you advise them that you are leaving/switching to another provider.

I think what might be going on here is that this: "About the 30-day notice: if you’re transferring your broadband to a new provider, the notice period starts once your new service is active" has been written unclearly. It seems like it refers to the event where you are leaving One.NZ (the end of your contract) but what that sentence is actually referring to is when you start coming under the term (i.e. you start coming under the term at the moment you join One.NZ - the start of your contract).

What you need to do here is just set your start date with your new provider 30 days after the date you advise One.NZ you are leaving and you won't get charged twice/pay any more than you should for your internet connection.

    Hope that helps!

This is exactly how I did my recent switch from One NZ as they uppped my price 8 months into a 12-month term contract. I still had to give 30 days notice without incurring Early Termination Fee.

On their cancellation form online, there is a dropdown box where you can select you are transferring/switching providers.

I selected a switch date about 27 days out from current date with my new provider, as I was happy to pay for the few extra days overlap.
