Cheap Tailor Made Suits

I'm in Auckland and I wanted to get a Tailor made suits hopefully three piece excluding the shirt if that's how it works so blazer, vest and pants.
I only have a budget of like 500-600.
Any chance I could get something that fits me also I'm a chunkie because of you guys thanks :( xD
Would something from bakers work and they tailor it?
Anyone know any price indications as well? :)

  • Last time i got a tailored jacket+shirt+pants about 15 years ago I got it from Vietnam. There were a few places that you could email your measurements to them and they would make cheap stuff accordingly. I got jacket, 3 shirts, 2 pants for under $200 and only one shirt was a bit too tight to wear. Maybe worth considering as another option?

    • Thank you hahah that's a crazy good price

  • I don't know of anywhere in Auckland where you could get a tailored suit for anything close to $500 (but then, you don't know what you don't know).

Similar to @eion, my 'go to' would be Asia. Hong Kong used to be good in the nineties and early 2000s, but it might have changed quite a bit since then, and I don't fly through there anymore.

I would only do it when passing through anyway, so there'd be no significant (marginal) travel costs.

PS: Three-piece FTW! Jacket and trousers, with just a shirt and tie, looks so shabby. It's okay if you're very young (18 to 20, maybe 21), but once into our twenties proper, we should all have grown up a bit :-)

    • This is a hilarious take on suit fashion.

      • Just wait a bit… there is a very good chance you'll get it at some point :-)

Thank you for that ahah :)

Your best shot is going to be getting something off the rack that fits across the shoulders and having it tailored. Go to Barker's or Hallensteins and find something you like then take that to a tailor and have them bring the jacket in/ trousers up to fit. Rule of thumb is that if the jacket fits across the shoulders you can mostly tailor the rest to suit (badum tish), though this doesn't hold if you're a dimensional outlier.

If you have a fair bit of lead time there are services based out of SE Asia that you can send your measurements to and have something made, but you'd want to find somewhere well reviewed with measurement guides and have someone who knows what they're doing take your measurements.

    • I got a bit of time it's for a friend's wedding lol do you know any good se Asian ones?

Also have you done th barkers/hallenstiens route. Like bakers have a full 3 piece for 449 atm how much do you think the tailoring for alterations would be? :)

      • Its really hard to say, since it depends on how well your specific body shape fits the off-the-rack suit.

You might be lucky, and you just happen to be almost exactly the right shape, and they just need to hem the trousers, and perhaps a small tuck on the jacket or something, in which case maybe $100 or even less.

However, if you are like me, and aren't the right shape (it seems that suits are made for people who are the same width all the way up, whereas I am more wedge shaped - wider at the top), it might be hundreds of dollars, and really not worth it.

        • Awesome thank you that makes sense ahaha I really appreciate the help! :D

  • Thanks guys I really appreciate th advice :)

  • There are quite a few cheap Indian tailors out in Papatoetoe, auckland. Bought a cheap Suit (blazer, shirt, pants) from a deal on here a few months ago for 150 and got the tailor to make it fit for an additional 200.

Search on fb marketplace for a tailor near you, tailoring isn't really a hard job to master so there'll be alot of sole traders out there right now,

    • Who did you go to if you don't mind sharing ahaha :) thats a really good price tbh.
Is the quality decent and does it fit well? :)
