I want the Pixel 10 Pro XL so bad

Anyone knows how to get it from Australia? I've searched ozbargain and I think the preorder deals are the best when buying the pixel 10s. Even waiting for them months after (even on Black Friday) still doesn't cut it and are still not cheap.

Has anyone tried pre-ordering in Australia with someone they know there? or YouShop? or fly to AU and get tax refund? God I want the Pixel 10 Pro XL so bad lol. I admit the Samsung flagships are cheaper here with stacked discounts but my whole ecosystem is with Google at the moment.

I got my Pixel 7 Pro with the AU tax refund from JB HiFi - happened to be in AU at the time for a work trip. Saving both the AU gst as well as the NZ gst you'd have to pay if you were importing one, while getting an in-store discount while they were trying to compete with other stores and a bunch of freebies was definitely worth the downsides of no consumer protection. It ended up being somewhere in the $300-400 range of cheaper than what i could get in NZ at the time.

I was overly honest and declared it at nz customs but they let me through because they could see that I'd set it up for me (added pictures of my daughter on the lock screen and wallpaper while waiting for a connecting flight) so they were happy i wasn't going to resell it.

Maybe now is a good time to have a gold coast holiday? Enjoy all the theme parks with no queues while there's no nz/au school holidays. Maybe pick up a phone while you're there? πŸ˜„

There is no Youshop in Australia, but these guys (haven't used them personally) seem to be the go to.

Otherwise you could try to find an eBay (Australia) seller that would be willing to do it for you. Maybe look through the phone sellers there and pick a few to ask the question. Depending on your morals you could ask about declaring a lower value for the phone on the paperwork. I know my Chinese suppliers ALWAYS do this, even though I don't actually want them too.

I really wanted a Pixel too, but I did some research and found that none of the local networks support any Pixels officially. With 3G switch off, 5G is the way, and there's a whole lot of carrier specific settings with 5G - and I'm just a bit worried about ongoing support. I went with Samsung in the end.

Fair enough - 5G has been working on Pixels for a couple years now, though!

It's the niggly things, for example my phone was dropping calls and freezing data connections on my regular drives between Auckland and Wellington in the same spots… around Hamilton, then again just around Taupo, Taihape and Levin. When I raised a case, they told me that my phone is "no longer supported", even though it was 5G and I bought it from an official Spark store. It was one of the earlier 5G phones… I upgraded to Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, and I never had these problems on the same network, in the same setting. Just saying that the "supported" means a bit more than just "it's working right now". There are rumours on the net that Google has been tinkering with blocking different features (incl. 5G) in different markets.

I have an older pixel purchased from Amazon. Great phone, but there is no support. When the screen had a defect neither Amazon nor Google will offer warranty or service (despite what Amazon claims) and both insist it is the others responsibility. Google's best suggestion for me was to send it to a someone I know in the U.S. to get it fixed and then sent back. Ended up fixing it myself with genuine parts they will ship here from Ifixit but it is several hundred dollars I shouldn't have had to pay.

Thank you beautiful people! I have decided to just go with the S25 Ultra as it's really cheap (with the EPP trade in deal) and on par with P10P XL anyway. Besides I've also researched that it will not have its full potential anyway in NZ as it's not on the list of supported countries and may have limited functionalities.

And will just save again towards buying that Ninja Swirl (hopefully on Black Friday).

That's the same conclusion I got to after some serious research - just an older model S24 Ultra. Have fun with it (I still can't believe how difficult Google/Samsung make it to transfer everything - data, apps, settings, preferences - over to a new phone).

      • Smart Switch?

      • Its pretty quick with smart switch and entering your google details to log in to google backup, photos etc.

        • Smart Switch didn't transfer any of app data. Only a handful of apps that backup their preferences to google restored everything. A lot of preferences haven't been transferred either. I had to recreate all my widgets. I had to re-login to most apps. A week earlier I have done the same on iOS and the experience difference is night and day.

          • @nzoutdoors: Ah it should have as long as its backed up on google and on your samsung account. I literally used smart switch from my s24u to s25u and it transferred everything, widgets, preferences etc.

            • @Lieutenantdave: And herein lies the problem. Majority of Android apps don't back up app data to google (even though it's encrypted, completely free to them, and it's how google designed it - properly! - it's just not mandatory for developers to comply with this afaik). If you're using more than just the google, samsung and meta apps, and you like to change the default settings, you'll quickly come across this problem. It's official too, I'm not making this up - see "What won’t copy during setup" section under https://support.google.com/android/answer/13761358 - and while Samsung Switch will copy a few of these items listed there, nothing will copy "Data from apps that don't use Android backup" without rooting the phone. This really is a big let-down in the Android eco-system in my opinion.

      • You can not be serious if you're comparing a Samsung phone with Pixel. Samsung doesn't even support Instagram or Tiktok (Pixel is the only android phone that supports HDR videos on both those apps)

        • HDR on Instagram and Tiktok? That's actually funny!!!

  • Why are you asking about Australia? Are you saying that this phone will never come to NZ and that's why? or are you saying that it will always be cheaper in Aus?
I also must get a Pixel but it's such a shame that PBtech doesn't ever sell that brand.

    • They sold the Pixel 8 briefly, for a very good price - $800. Didn't get the Pixel 9 though πŸ˜”

    • They don't sell it here for some reason. Can only buy via parallel importers that maybe came from other countries instead of AU.
