New rebate settings offers money back for more ratepayers

The Government has set the maximum rates rebate at $805 for the 2025/26 rating year.

However, changes to the qualification settings mean more people may qualify for a maximum rebate this year. I’ve posted this deal in the hope the exposure etc helps a family out there with finding this info.

Your rates for the 2025/26 year must be higher than $2000 for qualification. There are also two income thresholds - one for those with SuperGold Cardholders and one for those without.

• For SuperGold Cardholders, the income threshold to qualify for the maximum rebate of $805 has been raised from $31,500 to $45,000 – which is about the rate for a couple both receiving superannuation.

• For others, the income threshold to qualify for the maximum rebate of $805 is $32,210.

In both categories, earning more than these thresholds means you may still get arebate but it will be less than the maximum amount.

You can find out if you qualify for a rates rebate by using the Government’s Rates Rebate Calculator: https://www.govt.nz/browse/housing-and-property/getting-help…

The NZ Government provides a step-by-step process of how to download a form and apply on their website: https://www.govt.nz/browse/housing-and-property/getting-help…

Rates rebate forms are available online, or at the council service centre. They must be returned to Council for processing, either in-person or by post.

The Rates Rebate scheme is funded by the NZ Government, but the administration is delegated to District Councils. You may be contacted by Council to confirm information that is in your application.

Rates are 3300 this year wow. First time paying it . Not sure how a couple with dependents earning under 45k could live after paying rates along with everything else.

I am also paying rates for the first time and it's over $8000. I can see now why everyone is up in arms in the local Facebook groups.

      • My rates were 3200 for a pretty run of the mill south canterbury house.

      • Is that in a small population area. Or do you just own an expensive property compared to others? Mine are over 5k but live in a small population area. Aucklanders seem to pay a lot less on average despite getting far better services

        • Porirua - not sure exactly why they are so high here.

  • They have hardly increased the amount from last year, but rates have increased by a far higher percentage in many places. Think rates increase is 8% in my area and nearly 5k a year.

  • I'm fortunate enough to still have a job and can have steady income but the 14% rates increase sucks on top of the many increases starting July: water, power, rego

  • wtf $4000 rates for a 4 BR cross lease house
