I have always firmly believed that all my Christmas shopping should be completed no earlier (and no later!) than 24 Dec.
Of course, my wife buys all the pressies except her own, so I only have to buy for one person, but the stakes are, I admit, rather high.

Its a good marketing move. Given how often they have sales people may hold off byying something thinking it will be on special next week. This gives them piece of mind that theybcan claim the difference if it does gonon sale.
In practice, once you've bought it, how many people will go back and claim a $8 refund because the $80 frypan they bought at 20% is not 30% off?
Bonus points if you do go back they have lured you instore again and you may end up buying more stuff.
