I upvoted for the chicken breasts which are a good price, but I just had a look at how much chicken is in the Tegal products

    Tenders 64%
    Patties 60%
    Nibbles 64%
    Poppers 65%

That's kind of crazy. That means that your 600g bag of chicken patties only contains 360g of chicken. Are the nibbles real nibbles with bones in them or are they nibble shaped nuggets?

    • +1

      Yes they have bones.

    • Thanks to you I'm not buying. I wouldn't have noticed. No reason to downvote!

  • Woolworths(woolworths.co.nz)
Typical. These bbq beef patties are only 37% beef

    • They are labelled as BBQ Burger patties though, not just beef.
In total it is 59% meat according to the ingredient list, so not quite as bad.

      • Woolworths have done well with the product listing and it's clear they contain chicken but the pack says bbq beef patties. If brought quickly in store then checked back at home I think most people would be surprised at the lack of beef.

        • It's just BS marketing, you'll find misleading advertising in everything from orange juice to protein bars. Just Juice Orange and Mango for example is 78% apple juice, but you wouldn't know unless you read the list of ingredients or noticed the little apple logo on the bottom of the label.

What gets me with these Tegal things is the overall cost of them when you break it down. The Tenders for example contain 320g of chicken if their 64% chicken in the ingredients list is correct. That means that even if you bought 3 packs you still wouldn't get 1kg of chicken, and 3 packs on special are $30 and at full price are $50.
$50 for less than 1kg of frozen chicken covered in some herbs and flour, I find that borderline offensive.

I agree it is ridiculously expensive, but so many people are willing to pay through the nose for 'convenience'. I would just buy the chicken breasts for $10 / kg, chop them (or not), and if I wanted them coated, I would do that myself with flour and herbs, or whatever I wanted. It literally takes a few minutes - almost nobody is so busy they don't have the time. I'd also avoid all the crap that's in there like:

            Emulsifier (451)
            Anti-Caking Agent (170)
            Acidity Regulator (300)
            Colour (150c)

However, everyone is free to do whatever they like, including paying the $50 / kg that you mention - it's not for me to tell anyone else how to spend their money, even if they do seem to be pretty foolish. Probably mainly people that are rolling in cash who can afford to be lazy.

@Alan6984: Just to be clear, I wasn't telling anyone what they should or shouldn't buy. I was just breaking down what you're getting for your hard earned cash for those who didn't realize, and seeing as we're on ChoiceCheapies I thought some people might be interested in that because it sure as hell surprised me when I saw it. Obviously no one was interested it just pi$$ed people off so I'll try better next time.

Fair enough - I am agreeing with you that its a rip-off, and I know you weren't telling others what to do.

I'm just as perplexed at the number of people that must be willing to pay so much to save themselves a few minutes, given that clearly Tegal sell enough of the product to make it worthwhile for them.

For the avoidance of doubt, the downvote wasn't me, but the upvote on your comment I quoted here was :-)

@Alan6984: I justify it in my mind by considering what I'd be spending if I went to KFC instead if that helps you understand my stupid mentality.

Well, perhaps KFC is even worse in that respect :-(

I haven't worked out the cost per kg of KFC, but you would, at least, have to add in the time factor to collect, or delivery fees, but subtract the cost of cooking at home ;-P

                  • @Jexla: Just chuck normal chicken nibbles in the oven instead.

                    • @dealhunter: I don't buy the nibbles, just the burger patties. I agree though.

  • Fresh Chicken Breast Fillets (Boneless & Skinless) - $10.90/kg
    wats the fat content

    • 3.6g of fat per 100g

      • i looked at it in the shop the fat isnt listed, how do u know its 3,6g

        • Google

          • @samsteez: interesting the chicken mince at countdown is only 1.6g of fat per 100g

          • @samsteez:

            Google

Probably not the sort of thing to trust to a single random website (and certainly not to AI!) - we need to be more discriminating when sourcing technical info like that.

Was the source credible? Do other credible sources agree?
If credible, were they referencing chicken breast, or some other 'cut' of chicken (or even whole chicken)?
If breast, was it skinless or skin-on?

These are important questions that the fate of empires hang on you know ;-)

  • The chicken breast at $10.90kg is for the bigger packs, looks like over 1kg only.
At my local store, all the smaller packs were 15.80kg.

    • At my local store, all the smaller packs were 15.80kg.

If you are price sensitive, you could always choose to pay the lower price, divide a bigger pack up, and freeze all or some of it.

  • I saw chicken tenders at WhyKnot in East Tamaki and they were 35% chicken, and not that cheap

  • Bought some Rangitiki tonight
Not bad , I prefer these over tegel
