Is My Energy Pricing Better than Current Offers?

Hi all,

First time forum poster. I was checking out the Powerswitch site, as we've been with Mercury for 5+ years, and I keep seeing all these deals for new customers that switch.

But it seems like we have a better deal than any of the current market offers. I just wanted to confirm that I'm understanding things right.

Our current prices are:
Electricity
24 Hour 294 kWh x 27.87 cents
Fixed Charge 35 Days x 28.33 cents

Gas
Variable Usage Charge 445 kWh x 15.99 cents
Dual Fuel Discount 35 Days x -15.00 cents
Daily Fixed Charge 35 Days x 131.00 cents

Thanks in advance.

Kind regards,

UPDATE:

Hey all, I wasn't sure if I should edit the post or post a new comment to give an update so I did both. I managed to find the letter about a price increase for my daily fixed charge that was sent by snail mail from Mercury, it came into effect on the 30th of June.

New pricing is:
Electricity
24 Hour 25.97 cents per kWh (7% decrease from 27.87 cents)
Fixed Charge $1.20 per day (423% increase from 28.33 cents)

I guess I can look into some alternatives now.

  • Yea I think so. Your fixed charge alone is significantly cheaper and i'm surprised it hasn't increased. Most, if not all providers are at $1.20-$1.50 a day exc gst for a low user and $2+ for standard user. Thats a difference of around $30-$40 just on fixed charge

    • Awesome, thanks for the reply, I'll stick with Mercury for now then.

  • they will get to existing customers. right now its the new ones are getting the new pricing.

    • +1

I see, thanks for the reply, hopefully that's way further down the line

    • I've been with Mercury for past couple of years. Got a price increase letter last month which comes into effect at the end of this month.

My new electricity rates inclusive of GST are
      20. 34cents per kWh
      263.7cents per day

      I don't have gas.

I'm also surprised that OP's daily rate for electricity is so low, or is it because they have gas as well?

      • I'm not too sure why the daily is so low, but I do remember getting a price increase letter too, maybe the change is also at the end of the month, not sure I can find the letter now.

      • Were you on the Mercury 2-year-fixed plan?

A lot of people who were on that plan didn't have their prices raised at the end of it, they got very lucky, curious if their luck came to an end

I was on the 2year fixed plan. Commenced in June 2022. Price rise effective from today was my first increase after coming off that fixed term plan.

          • @kiwi harry: Interesting, 3 years on 2022 rates is for sure a win.

I did the 2 year term with them June 2021 to 2023, but they raised rates right at the end of the initial term, so moved elsewhere. Looks like 2022 was the lucky year to sign up.

  • The only way you can tell if you are good is to contact other providers and ask them if they can beat it. Your rate is tied to your location and other factors.

    • great suggestion, I'll give that a try

  • I don't think your fixed daily charge on power is correct. Have you missed a digit?
Your gas daily charge is cheap, your gas kwh isn't. I am with Contact my daily charge is $1.812 day, gas charge is 8.55c per kwh. I am with powershop for power.
Looking at changing, but everyone has upped their prices.

I double-checked my bill, and the fixed daily charge on power is correct. I'm guessing it's quite cheap compared to current prices. I tried to include a screenshot in my post but couldn't otherwise you could see for yourself.

      • Could try copy and paste? That is an amazing rate, thats why I queried it.

      • You can upload a picture to your cheapies account and paste the link

        • @Stoic - that link is just for your user id, it will give an error for anyone else. This should work:

          • @bigcheese: I put junkbball2's user id in the link but good tip for the future.

            • @Stoic: Cheers, I think I added the screenshots now in the post, hopefully everyone can see it

  • you have verygood rates with very low day chargers i pay more in day charges and less on 24 hour per unit charges i am also with mercury and they change pricing once a year so its good to budget power consumption

Thanks for your reply, guess I should stick with Mercury until they they hike my pricing.

  • Your rate is so much better than mine. May I know if you are in Auckland too?

    • I am in Hamilton
