Would a Mini PC like this work in NZ?

https://www.amazon.com/GMKtec-Windows-i7-1195G7-Desktop-Comp…?

This seems like a good deal, with free shipping.

My only concern is that it wouldn't come with the right power adaptor, so would need to use a travel adaptor. Either that or buy a generic power adaptor for the correct voltage and with the correct size tip

Other than that, any other concerns one should have about buying something like this from Amazon?

Can anything like this be purchased anywhere here in NZ locally, even if it's a bit more expensive?

Thanks!

  • PC is cheaper from their AU store once you add coupon to cart

    NZ657.85 vs. NZ$791.20

Absolutely would work here, with the correct adapater, but as Wakrak mentioned, better off buying from AU.

This one: https://www.amazon.com.au/BOSGAME-4-5GHz-Computers-Windows-D… is $550 with a CPU that is twice as powerful and uses half the power.

Or this one, also under $600, but more powerful again, with DDR5 RAM but a smaller SSD: https://www.amazon.com.au/ORIGIMAGIC-Gaming-12-core-Support-…

Unaware of many retailers here that sell them, would be hard to compete with Amazon and Aliexpress and still make a profit on them I'd imagine.

    • Yip I don't think size of SSD is as important as cpu power / speed and size / speed of RAM. It's easy to add storage or add a NAS in the future

  • If the power adapter comes with a clover cable like shown in the listing, it is easy to just buy below cable and it should be fine. Power rating of the adapter is 100-240v so all good.

Amazon AU has better deals on mini pc. Keep an eye on Ozbargain as many mini pc deals gets posted there. I have bought Beelink N100 from aliexpress for good price so that can be another option as well. NZ market is quite expensive for mini pcs.

What is your use case? You want Intel or Amd?

    • Not bothered by chipset, to be used for a home office. General PC tasks, nothing graphics intensive, but would want to have 3 x screens, all 4k if possible, but not crucial

      • 3x screens at 4k is somewhat graphically intensive. Still has to push all those pixels.

        • OK yeah fair comment. I was coming from the angle that I don't use any intensive software. The hardware should be capable of it though.

          • @ScoobyNZ: Ryzen mini pc are more power efficient and cheaper compared to what you would get with Intel as a whole package. Like ram/ssd etc.

Edit: something like this when you get a deal.

  • Just another NZ option for you:

I picked up an i5 of this, added SSD and 32gb ram for around 800 total (they had a bit of a sale, pricing looks a bit higher now)

    https://www.pbtech.co.nz/product/BPCMSI4829919/MSI-CUBI-5-12…

The i3 looks to have comparable performance to that older i7, and uses less power.

    • I'm currently switching out my older i7 NUC for a technically slower, but newer, i5 that will use half the power and actually be slightly faster.

The difference between heat generated, and as a result fan speed and noise has been massive in a, I haven't actually heard the new one yet - where the old one frequently ran at full speed.

ChatGPT is pretty good as comparison if you plug in the numbers.

Mini pc's are of course available in nz

  • You can likely buy a fairly new ex-lease one for not much. Often all they've been running is advertising for a big LED sign.

  • Most power adapters are universal switching 100 v to 240 v which are supplied with small form factor , mini 1 litre type PCs , Australian plugs and power input should be fully compatible with nz ,
the specs are good 11th gen i7 seems good value , i my not run mission-critical stuff on this general media consumption should be ok . what are you thinking of using this NUC for ?

As a word of advise do not use the operating system that ships with the unit.
Reinstall from a USB Drive from the Microsoft website.

Other units on amazon have been found with Malware!

    • Yep don't trust the bulk of the brands, some have been outed a few times with an apology and then it keeps happening and they blame it on someone nefarious on the production line. If they don't have the drivers accessible to install with your clean version don't buy it.

    • Thanks for that. At the very least, if I did get one.. I'd run it through a good series of virus tests and system cleaners.

      • At the very least, if I did get one.. I'd run it through a good series of virus tests and system cleaners.

I would strongly advise against that - much better to just wipe it and install from scratch.

Anti-virus and the like can be fooled, especially if the malware was installed up front - anything you see (or don't see), you might as well have chosen the blue pill.

Installing from scratch is pretty trivial anyway, so why take the risk of being lazy?

        • Install 11 LTSC instead.
          No junkware.
Just need to find a way to get a valid licence :)

Just need to find a way to get a valid licence :)

What makes you say that it doesn't come with a valid license?

            • @Alan6984: Windows 11 LTSC is VLK

              • -1

                @mdsl32:

                Windows 11 LTSC is VLK

The issue being discussed is potential malware being pre-installed when the PC arrives.

In that context, I don't see what significant benefit there would be to installing anything other than the version that is already legitimately licensed?

Where would they get a valid license for for Win11 LTSC without spending a load more?

  • I looked through GMKTek's website and Amazon offerings and am looking at something like this… it's lower spec, yes, but it's $295 NZ Shipped (after the applied coupon), plus any GST, so I think that's a pretty good deal. I can always upgrade the RAM, and I have plenty of external storage available.

    https://www.amazon.com.au/GMKtec-Desktop-Computer-Attached-G…

Can anybody counter this with something comparable? More RAM / Better Chipset?

EDIT : Also something I need to take into consideration, none of my monitors are USB-C powered, so the option should have either 3 x HDMI or DP 1.4 , which the above one does. Thanks.

    • Feels expensive. No offense

      • None taken. Open to all options .. please advise where the same thing can be found cheaper, or better spec at the same price :)

        • Aliexpress if you don't mind waiting for some coupons & cashback offers.

Look up options below. Beelink, GMKTec, Soyo, Kamrui etc
          https://www.ozbargain.com.au/search/node/mini%20pc

Edit: I think the same GMKTec one is cheaper on Aliexpress shipped without any coupons
