Electricity Provider with an EV?

Hi all,

I know I could trawl the comparison sites but you guys tend to offer the better suggestions.

Just bought an EV and home charger getting installed tomorrow, sadly don't have the budget for wall battery and solar.

Currently with Genesis who offer cheap overnight charging so could just change my package

Currently use about 1000kwh per month without the EV, so this will naturally climb.

Probably drive around 1000k per month, so possibly only a couple of full recharges required but they'll be greedy ones.

Any advice welcomed!

Contact has the same plan, but with less hoops to jump through. I had issues switching to the genesis EV plan and there was a long change over time because they had to do something with the meter, which contact did not. Daily charge is higher for contact, but the variable charge is lower, so depends how much you use. For me, it was about the same with just a few dollar difference per month.

I am with Meridian 4 hour free plan. Get quote from all providers and see what works best for you. Meridian also offers free charging for Tesla during night time outside of those 4hr free plan which is a great bonus.

I have selected 9pm-12 & 1pm-2pm free as few days a week I work from home so it's good to use that 1-2pm free time for maybe a quick tesla charge, quick laundry, heatpump or oven.

    • What percentage are you managing to get in the free hours? The plan is still not taking new customers.

i went with Genesis, half price power between 9pm-7am everyday. ChargeNet bills via Genesis, so pay 18c per kw instead of up to 90c per kw at the fast chargers. Further discounts up to additional 10% off monthly electricity and gas too. Took them a few weeks to change my meter. As per usual check regional pricing as it may vary.

Super helpful thank you, have gone for this, wasn't aware of the ChargeNet perk too - thanks a bunch

  • Don't know how it compares to the c/kW options above since its priced differently, but Powershop has an EV Powerpack that lets you buy $14 of power for $10 every 2 weeks. I guess it's effectively $8 discount per month if you buy the pack regularly.

if you travel a lot then genesis is almost a no brainer, provided their per kWh cost is competitive. otherwise time to bust out your spreadsheet and get cranking…
