Does anyone have reviews for Matagas in Auckland region? And any details about switching from Rockgas? Do they refund annual fee and unused bottles? Also have they stopped bundling with Contact power and broadband?
LPG 45kg Gas Bottles

Comments
I got the price increase email as well for $144/bottle.
3 weeks???
Kiwigas on CHCH can almost always do it the next day. And last I looked has better pricing.
i got an email yesterday saying the price is going up to $151/45kg bottle from 8/6/25
was with matagas for 5 years, great to deal etc. agree re ordering in winter with some leadtime. if you have two bottles just order when the first is empty etc.
Matagas are great, but this year alone they have increased pricing twice. I can see people were charged different fees for this 45kg bottles.
I am in Papakura, last year the fee was $120. Feb 2025 they increased it to $138 and last night email says further increase to $147i am inclined to move to Elgas, they are offering $100 credit and free 1 year rental on bottles for new customers.
Did you get a quote from elgas?
Oh you can see them on the website for your address - for me variable $175, fixed $145, standard $165.
Now I'm getting spammed targeted ads, Genesis is offering $150 credit for bottled LPG with up to 6% discount.
The details appear to be 12 month fixed term $175 per bottle, 1% ebill discount, 3% fixed term discount. Monthly rental $5.75 per bottle.
Yea whatever saving you are making, it still cannot offset the higher price per bottle. not a great deal IMO.
I got automatically switched to Genesis from their subbrand Frank, and I see it is now $175 per bottle. Previously Frank were one of the cheapest out there. Moving providers though is a PITA when you have existing gas in the bottles and whether they provide a credit for unused gas etc . I would save very little for the hassle as I am not a big gas user due to it solely being used for instant hot water..
I also got "moved" but didn't take them up on the offer of signing up immediately for 12 months. Their price was going to be $175/btl plus $11.50/mo, incl GST with up to 5% discount for payment methods and 5% if you have another energy account with them.
Genesis agreed not to charge any monthly rental until we signed up, so we've been rent free for a couple of months already but we will need to switch soon as we're running out.
I called Elgas and [edit] Rockgas today, waited on hold for far too long so don't even know how much they were going to charge. Called Matagas and got through within a minute, they quoted me $156/btl plus $13.80/mo. Given the good reviews here and single experience of excellent service, that's what I'm going with.
Didn't you also get free credit? I think I got $120 ish but I think I had to signup to Genesis prior to Frank automatically moving me. Basically it pays the rental for a year. But I only use about 1 bottle a year due to my hot water usage being so low, so is very cheap. But this actually resulted in me then changing my electricity company and Frank put up low power user daily rate twice in less than a year. Moved to electric kiwi which still has lower daily rate plus a free hour. But Gen retailers are in such a strong market position.
Yeah, there was that benefit, but I got lazy and let it lapse.
Thanks team, very helpful. I have previously found their email responses very quick. I emailed rockgas yesterday, haven't got a response yet.
Rockgas moved up to $146 per bottle Nov 2024 for us in Auckland if that helps. Don't know if there are going to be increases if matagas is going up. On the flipside rockgas deliver usually within the week. Maybe matagas has caught up with the competition and are now putting prices up.
Assume this may have been mentioned before on CC but I never have both gas bottle valves open in order that the gas automatically switches from one to the other. When the flag turns red to indicate one bottle is empty it may still have up to 2kg left in it (I weighed it one time) The gas company is more than happy to take the ‘empty’ one away! Of course the downside is the shower may go cold until you go outside and turn the other bottle on!
100% this, most delivery drivers leave both valves open, I have to check it every time. It also saves the awkward situation (has happened once) where the wife is stuck in the shower, all soaped up, water goes cold and… Both bottles are empty!
We're with matagas. We find them great, easy to deal with, the app is handy when we need to order new tanks. When we swapped to them , they organised the return of the previous companies tanks
You also just need to make sure you order with plenty of time. Peak winter it sometimes took up to 3 weeks to get the replacement tank delivered.
Their prices are also increasing next month to $147/tank
