To be fair, I have never paid a joining fee for a gym - every single one has always negotiated that down to nothing, as what they really want are your monthly payments. I haven't joined one since Covid, so maybe things have changed, but I suspect not really.

You can also negotiate the minimum term, but that has often proven harder to move the dial on :-(

A joining fee is such a ridiculous concept, why would you want to put up a barrier for people to become long term members? I should be getting a joining reward, not paying it. :)

At least credit the joining fee towards the sub fees once a certain period has passed (to ensure people stay on).

      Yep.

Thing is, I guess, many people probably pay it, and don't even ask for a discount, let alone a full exemption.

I don't recall any place ever saying no, nor even arguing when I said I wasn't paying to join - it must be quite normal, and they count themselves lucky when a sucker voluntarily pays it :-)

If other gyms weren't charging it (and making that well known), then the joining fee would likely die a natural death, but since enough people are incentivising gyms to keep charging it, those people get what they want, and the fee stays for them.

It's a kind of perfect charge in some respects - completely voluntary!

A joining fee uses the sunk cost fallacy to keep members renewing their subscription. If it was free to leave and join again when you wanted, many more people would cancel their membership that they don't use.

But because of the joining fee, many people won't cancel their membership since they don't want to lose out what they "invested" to have a membership.

A cost of joining is also a cost of leaving if the person thinks they might want to join again in the future. Especially for a heavily oversubscribed gym such as city fitness, they rely on keeping a large part of their members not using the gyms.

The only way they can do that is by making the cost of letting the membership continue feel less than the cost of leaving and forfeiting your joining fee. That's why their membership prices are so low.

do note that the cheapest plan $8 only allows you to go to the gym you choose, they removed "Access to all Club Locations".

    • Yeah has been like that since Feb 2024. If you were already a member prior to that change, you are still able to access all club locations

yea that was the bees knees, there doesnt appear to be a limit on memberships for home gym, mine gets busier and busier to the point of having to go to another gym but you cant on the lowest plan.
