  • Alternatively, just chat with CS to get a $50 voucher

Primary appeal of the deal is the free e-waste disposal. As an example, Abilities charge $40 to dispose of a CRT TV/Monitor.

On the voucher, $50 off a $500 spend is nothing to write home about, but sometimes Samsung vouchers stack, so there is the possibility you could use both.

Anyone who disposes of hazardous waste in their council collected bins is unlikely to go out of their way to drop off at E-waste days or go to the trouble taking it to Abilities, regardless of cost. It's got little to do with the number of brain cells and more to do with having (or not) an moral compass. I might be losing the odd brain cell, but if I knew my $40 would mean my TV wouldn't be leaching heavy metals into the ground water, and instead gave a disabled person a paying job, I'd probably do it (unless of course a cheap/free option like this is available - clearly my moral compass is not pristine either).

          • @CheapAzChips:

clearly my moral compass is not pristine either

            Cleaner than some though :-)

      • That's interesting. It's free here in Hamilton at the Lincoln Resource Recovery Centre

  • just checking is it free to drop off e-waste or they charge $40?

  • sorry got confused with ealrier $40 tv/crt comment. Understood it free thank you

    • Understood it free thank you

Scott was explicit that monitors are $40 at Abilities so not just CRTs or TV sized units.

I don't see anything suggesting there is a charge at Eden Park this weekend, but perhaps I missed something?

      • The eden park / snells farm events are free.

        Regarding Abilities

CRT / Rear projection (both monitor and tv) is $40"

Flat screen (I assume LCD / OLED etc, not flat screen CRT's) TV's: $15

Flat screen (I assume LCD / OLED etc, not flat screen CRT's) Monitor's: $7

        https://abilities.co.nz/services/pricing/

Think my formatting may have caused come confusion above.

        • Cool - thanks :-)

I think you are correct about LCDs etc - CRTs are always curved (hence the use of the term 'flat screen' for later technologies that actually are).

If I recall correctly, even the later CRTs were only called FST (Flatter Squarer Tubes).

        • A generally free alternative is called Go Recycle, in New Lynn. From the website:

"We accept most forms of electronic waste for recycling. Our recycling is FREE OF CHARGE* if dropped to our depot. We CANNOT accept CRT TV's. *CRT Computer Screens can be accepted but may incur a charge. Some examples of what we take are: Flat Screens - Must not be cracked…"

"We accept all Whiteware for recycling and also many common Household Appliances. There is no charge for Recycling of Whiteware, Appliances or E-waste. Free drop off to site, there will be people to help you unload if needed."

  • Does anyone know if this includes a dishwasher? Can't see anything that defines e-waste. I presume I can bring in a broken dishwasher?

    • Unknown.

Note that most scrap meatal dealers will take (but not pay you for) large whiteware if you rock up with it in the boot on a trailer.

If anyone just wants a $50 voucher, this is what the QR code links to.

    • Clicked on the link but it's blank? Anyone know how to get the $50 voucher?

      • Feel free to pm me if anyone has any vouchers they don't intend to use :) Thanks in advance
