A Total Non Gamer Has Just Purchased a PS5. Help

As mentioned in the title I am a non gamer. I've picked up a PS5 digital near new for an exceptional price.
My daughter's enjoy playing PS3 and PS4 games every so often.
Is it worth me keeping the PS5 for the daughters to use and what are the prices like for game downloads?
The daughters are 5 and 8 years old and enjoy Sonic, Lego games, Marvel Super Hero games, Little Big Planet and cart racers.

Thanks in advance.

  • For one, most PS4 games have "free" PS5 upgrades, mainly for the graphics. However given your daughters age, I doubt most if their games have the upgrade. (Think 'M' rated games which has the free upgrade like assassins creed or spiderman)

Astro bot and world is probably one that they're going to enjoy which is PS5 exclusive

    • Excellent. Thank you for that. I will keep all of their favourite game disks for the PS4. The PS5 that I got is the non disk version, but for what I paid I would happily get the disk drive add on. I'll download the Astro Bot game for them. Thanks again.

Astro bot is a total hit with the kids. Thanks for the suggestion.

PS3 is getting quite long in the tooth now - PS4 is fine, and PS5 will be good for many years into the future.

We use a PS5 for other things as well as games such as streaming (NetFlix, Disney, F1TV, TVNZ, TV3 etc), music (Spotify mainly), YouTube (personally, I can't be bothered with the compromise of watching YouTube (or anything else) on a PC, let alone the crappiness that is a 5" mobile phone screen, but the kids seem have gotten themselves used to it).

There are free games you can download for PS5 (some are okay), and we usually buy second-hand from EB or wherever, so the costs are usually around $5 to $20.

    • PS3 really is feeling very dated now. I forgot to mention that they still love playing my PS2 as well. We have an excellent catalogue of kid friendly games that I've collected over the last couple of years for all of our consoles.

The PS5 that I got is the non disk version, but for what I paid I would happily get the disk drive add on to buy cheap second hand games.

      Thanks for your thoughts.

There are two versions of Astro. The first version is built into the PS5 and installed when you buy it. It's free. Its also VERY good and your kids should love it. Check it out.

Astro Bot is the 2nd version and costs a bit to buy >$70 or more……I have both. Personally we loved Astro #1 ……….Astro Bot (#2) is similar but different and a bit more difficult.

Keep the PS5 as it has great graphics and the older machines will die sometime.

    • Excellent, thanks for your input. I will definitely check out the Astro Bot games.

I think I've been convinced to keep the PS5. Makes sense to future proof.

    • Astro bot is a total hit. My girls love it.

  • Ok so you need to work out which version of digital PS5 you have. If it's the newer (slim) model, you can purchase a disc drive to attach to the console, and this will allow you to buy games on disc. Otherwise, you're stuck with the online store as the only source of games - no bargain bin or second hand deals for you!

If your daughters still play games on the PS3 you'll need to keep that around, as only the PS3 can play those. The PS5 is backwards compatible with the PS4 however, so you could potentially get rid of the PS4 and use the PS5 to play those same games. Caveat, of course, is if the PS4 games are on disc you'll need a PS5 + disc drive to play them, as there's nowhere to insert the disc on the digital only PS5.

Although the digital PS5 looks like a good deal, having a disc drive allows you to pick up bargains, second hand games and borrow games from others, all of which will save you more in the long run than staying with digital only.

    • Thank you. The disk thoughts had crossed my mind. The model I picked up is the slim no disk version. For what I paid I will happily purchase the disk drive add-on for cheap second hand games. The non sharing is annoying for the no disk version, I'm sure there have been some purchase regrets by people.

Good to know about backwards compatibility with the PS4/5. We have quite a good collection of kid friendly games.

Thanks for your input. Seems to me the PS5 is a keeper.

  • PS5 is really good going forward if you want new games! Some PS5 games 2nd hand are still really expensive for some reason lol. imo prices are ok at best for PS5 digital store. PS Plus is worth it if you get a discount, there are a lot of games you can get. imo PS Plus is only good if you got that Mightyape discount or still have the PS Plus turkey one ahaha. There a decent amount of 'retro' games from PS1/2 available on PS Plus (highest plan not sure what its called) which are more child orientated.
PS4 games are backwards compatible with PS5 (most of them) but not PS3, but a lot of PS3 games are digitally available on the PS Store or PS Plus.
Do you mind cracking the console (jailbreak) for free pirated games? It can be done easily on PS3/PS4 and it makes those consoles well worth it ;) (Henkaku for PS3). Just keep in mind you won't be able to play online anymore with a cracked console.
My PS3 is cracked and I just download games to play them. Played all that I wanted on PS3 so don't use it as much anymore but I saved a bit of money even if the games were cheap 2nd hand lol. Also, IMO, PS3 has a lot more child-friendly games, even more so on PS2.
All of these games should be available in some capacity on PS3/4/5 :) (Digital download or buying the physical remastered version).
At that age, I really liked Ape Escape (PS1, should be available on PS3/4/5), Ratchet and Clank series (PS2, but PS3 is really good, generally child-oriented), Jak and Daxter (original), and Crash Bandicoot. They are good for children imo. Astro bot series is also great! Ooo also Rayman, Sly Cooper and The Cars games (like with Lighting Mcqueen from the movie) ahah. So many memories xD
If you can get a cheap PS Move kit for PS3/PS4 its REALLY fun! Its like a Nintendo Wii with similar games like Sports Champion (tennis, golf etc) etc.

Sorry a bit of a word vomit but hope that helps! :D

Excellent! Thanks you for all of that. Last I played online was GTAV PS3 while wifey was pregnant with the first… So about 9 years ago.
Over the last couple of years I've been buying bundles of PS2,3,4 games from FB market. Much rather them play on a console than tablets. We've found Sonic team racing on PS3 great family fun with all four of us playing against each other at the same time.

I'll have a look into PS plus as well as store.

Again, thanks for your input. It all helps.

      Keep it coming folks.

      • No problem :D

      • Ahaha I can't believe GTA V is still the current GTA xDDD.
Nice those PS2 games will be worth a pretty penny now ;)

        • GTAV. 13 years, there has to be some kind of record with that. Madness

        • Nice those PS2 games will be worth a pretty penny now ;)

Does that mean my PSX (1) games would be worth a bit now too?

I think I still have GTA (1) for the PSX somewhere :-)

          • @Alan6984: Yup a lot of games have increased in price not all but quite a few ahah.
Thats why ebgames started that retro game trade in they are trying to cash in lmaoo

@1ys23: Might have to check that out, but it would be too hard to part with Doom I/II and Civ2 even if I haven't played them in twenty nearly thirty years ;-)
