Congrats on the new job!
Suggestions below in no particular order:
Nice.
Do you want plugin hybrid or non? RUC now apply to plugins!
I don’t think we will drive that much to justify a plug in.. to and fro north shore daily from central
Plus didn’t want to pay ruc hence was thinking hybrid
You could potentially get an Jap import Lexus UX 250h 2018 - 2020 for around that number. Way more comfortable and same parts as a toyota. They are also hybrids.
Was more thinking of new hybrid better warranty service etc
I would not buy an MG. They seem to be the least reliable cars according toy online research.
I always look at these main factors:
- economical
- 5 star safety rating
- reliable since that will cost lots less
Have a look at a Kia Niro Hybrid.
After my own research I just bought a 2nd Niro EV for 31k with 20,000 km on the clock, 1.5 ys old.
3.5 ys left on the warranty, 6.5 on the battery.
They make hybrids, too.
I've done the math a while back. Cost includes power petrol and RUCS
EV is about 12cents/km
Hybrid is about 14cents/km if you can average 5.48L/km
If you can get a hybrid that does ~4.76L/100km. It's 12cents/KM
Phev is about 8cents/km on full time ev or 13cents/km on 50ev/50petrol,
My wife does a 100km round trip/day to Waikanae 4 days a week and I got her an ex lease Hyundai ioniq EV (not the 5), if you can get over the looks it has everything you need, especially adaptive cruise
Thanks will look at these options .. did you buy off a Trademe or Kia dealership ?
I meant the Hyundai
I bought off trademe off a dealership in hamolton and has it shipped to Wellington. It was an ex IRD lease vehicle, figured the IRD don't drive much so they shouldn't have trashed it, it was 3 years old with only 6000kms
They're pretty cheap now

So im in the hybrid market now too.
Thinking Toyota Aqua or Hyundai Ioniq.
Any others I should be considering?
Nissan Note e-Power for the same size as the Aqua
E note I think has a higher fuel consumption than aqua, but I hear theyre really fun to drive especially if you get a Nismo. Aqua will do the job and be really fuel efficient. Maybe around 4L/100km, but it will lack technology compared to a Hyundai
I think it's only slightly higher. Wish I had got one for my daughter instead of an Aqua. The Aqua is fine though, reliable and really cheap to run, just built really cheap inside.
@kfr23: Another question - when buying a hybrid from a dealer thats already done 70km, will i likely need to replace the battery in a couple of years?
Looking at 2018 Aqua from a dealer thats done around 70km. Just reading that a hybrid battery only lasts 8 to 10 years, so does that mean i would be up to replacing the battery in 3 years? Does the dealer usually offer a battery warranty? Cheers
@L3tstaxth1s: It depends I think. If the battery isn't used much (older car with fewer KMs), they seem to die sooner. If the battery is actively in normal use (maybe 10,000 KMs a year), they should last between 10 - 15 years I believe, especially with the newer models.
If you buy from a Toyota dealer directly, they often offer a 5 year battery warranty included.
Thanks will add to the list to research and test
I upgraded from an Aqua to a 2018 Hyundai Ioniq Hybrid. Was considering a Nissan Note but the owner accepted similar price as a Note was. it was 100,000km+, got a battery test done at Hyundai and no issues. Been using it for around 7 months and no issues.
Ioniq is a massive upgrade obver the Aqua. The seating space and boot is much large. Drive feels better and is nice and smooth for city driving, especially over bumps. Economy seems similar, if only slighlty less. Averaging 3.8L/100km, do 50km daily trip for work, 50/50 motorway and city driving.
The adaptive cruise control is awesome, operates from 10km/h+ so even in traffic can leave it on so so helps with the start/slow down.
I would have gone for the full EV ioniq if the prices were a bit cheaper, but recommend this over the Note or Aqua if you get a decent price.

Possibly. It really depends. My Lexus got to around 120,000k then it needed a battery replacement.
You can get aftermarket batteries for most popular hybrids "Relatively" cheaply these days. Or Refurbished ones.
I think a brand new genuine one for my Lexus was going to be 5k which to be honest is less than I thought it would be, being Lexus and all.
