Recommendations Request - Headphones with Noise Isolation and Noise Cancelling Mic

Have a need to use a set of headphones for VOIP application on workstation, within a very noisy environment. So need

  1. Headphones which effectively block surrounding noise from ears, and
  2. Noise cancelling mic which won't pickup ambient noise.
  3. Comfortable for extended use.

Won't be using the mic all the time, but keen to block industrial noise etc.

I'm guessing a gaming style headset may be the best bet. Not being a gamer though, seems to be a huge range of products and brands out there.

Just wondering if anyone has experience with this sort of kit. Keeping costs down is great, but happy to pay for quality.

Any suggestions?

  • I don't have any personal recommendations, but I'd always suggest checking out Pricespy. Judging by the product rank, the Kingston HyperX Cloud II seems to be a very high quality product at a reasonable price. The Amazon reviews seem to back this up also.

  • Thanks Shaw. I'll check that out. I was expecting to end up getting something from Banggood or similar, once I had an idea what to look for. Plenty of flashing LED headsets etc for the gamers on those sites. But needed to get the acoustics right.

Even been considering one of those cheap 3D video viewer headsets mentioned here recently for even greater situational isolation. Designed for movies on smartphones. But wondered if you could use same with internet etc streamed onto the phone?

So basically use the phone headset 3D video viewers as a computer monitor, together with the isolation headphones. A cheap kind of personal VR outfit with complete audio and visual isolation.

Thanks again for the help, Shaw.

Can't say I've ever thought of doing something that extreme, but it could be worthwhile if you are after total immersion.

      • With the 3D viewer being $15 or so, cheap enough to experiment with. Just used to working in some very busy noisy places, while on the go. Be nice to have a simple rig to provide some privacy and focus. Imagine though that the eye fatigue factor with the 3D viewer may be quite high.

        • Yea, I've read a little bit about the adverse effects of it, and they don't sound too good. Might be something worth reading while waiting for it to arrive.

        • @Shaw: Have a colleague who owns a gaming company designing fully immersive games for the Oculus Rift. Had a play with some of their prototypes. Amazing immersive experience but found it fairly nauseating (motion sickness) after awhile.

Might be better in a full spec reclining gaming chair. Expecting there to be some kind of isolation projection hood equipped chair available before long. So you're operating inside the device rather than wearing it.

        • @Jay:

Yea, I found that with Google cardboard too, kind of like really sweet cake, awesome in really small amounts.

Or even further than that, like a fully immersed room, with interactive elements. That'd be sweet.

        • @Shaw: Yes, not quite to the stage of our own personal Holodecks (° ͜ʖ ͡°)

        • @Jay:

Haha, don't go there around Scotty, he'd get all excited!
