Price Match Request @ PB Tech not worth the hassle

Tried to get a Price Match from PB Tech on JB Hifi’s price for the PS5 disc version and this was their response after waiting a day for a reply.

If an item is priced somewhere at a good price it will probably sell out before pb tech even reply so I won’t even look their way again.
Has anyone else had experience of this happening?

  • I'd say just buy it from the retailer you're trying to price match it from. If they don't want the sale, so be it. Their loss.

  • I always have a strong preference to purchase from the original retailer (with the lowest price), rather than give my business to someone else that is less competitive (albeit via a price match), as I believe this encourages more competition, and hence lower prices overall in the long run.

If I purchase from someone via a price match, it feels like I am rewarding them for having a higher price in the first place.

Price BEAT (like M10 for example) is a different matter altogether though :-)

    • I pricematch if the original store is a hassle to get to, or if the matching store handles returns/refunds better. I've had good experiences with JB Hifi and I like giving them my business.

  • They shouldn’t be offering price matching if it isn’t an easy process for the customer.

    • Some employees (almost at all retailers) do make price matching very difficult, for why I cannot understand, they act like it's money from their own pockets…haha. I also had very bad experiences at Woolworths with their price scanned incorrect policy.

      • Had a guy at chemist warehouse grilling me about sauvage elixir being $70 cheaper elsewhere and he asked why it was cheap. I was like idk, it's a sale. He kept reciting to me 'yea, but why is it so cheap?' and was adamant that he needed to know.

I was like "dude. They're having a sale. Why are they having a sale? Because they've decided to have a sale. More than that I don't bloody know just price beat it".

        • Some act like it comes out of their pocket. I do get it but also, as long as you're following company procedures then just do it.

  • I have only done price matches instore with PBtech. Online it was only ever Warehouse which was easy to do via their chat.

  • PS5 definately poor margin not worth the loss.
Places like JB and HN make up the margin on cables and powerboards

    • What and PB don't/can't??? PB sell a SHIT LOAD more cables etc than these guys.

The most expensive power board PBTech sells is $70~.

My point is the margins earned are shifted elsewhere and as pointed out by other people the gross margin is lower so places like HN will take a loss just to attempt to upsell those extras which believe me people take.

  • I've only done in-store price match and was successful all the time.
Got e-book reader and micro sd cards price matched.
Didn't want to pay and wait for delivery so ended up getting price match

  • I've attempted 1 time, successfully, online (via their support ticket system) pricematching with PB. I've attempted 4 times, succeeded 3 times, instore pricematching with them.

  • PB Tech tend to run on very low margins compared to some of the larger tech chains, so this isn't surprising especially when shops like JB Hi Fi will often use loss leaders as a way to get people in the door.

  • How long do people normally have to wait for a response when asking online? I asked for a price match this morning and still haven't heard anything from PB. I used the form while logged in and can see my price match as an unassigned ticket from 7 hour ago so it definitely was sent.

    • The online form, it usually take them 2-3 business days to reply, usually after the deal/sale or price match price is gone.
Never once had them reply same day I'm pretty sure,

  • I don't understand the point of getting a price match. Price beat, sure, but otherwise I'd just purchase from the retailer offering the deal.

    • Sometimes the competitor is local and the cheaper place is a distance away.

    • I don't understand the point of getting a price match. Price beat, sure, but otherwise I'd just purchase from the retailer offering the deal.

Completely agree that we shouldn't encourage price matching unless there is a cogent reason to do so.

It rewards retailers that have higher prices, by encouraging them to price discriminate between customers that are able to pay more (and are willing or lazy or ignorant or whatever) and those that want to pay a lower price (by price matching).

Price BEAT is a different matter of course.
