Best Place for New Mazda Keyfob

Hi

My wife lost her main mazda key/fob over a year ago, and unfortunately it's still missing. Mazda 2 - NZ New - 2014 - VIN: JM0DE10Y2E0286352

We still have the spare key (no remote buttons).

Does anyone know the cheapest place to get another Mazda key/fob including programmed, it seems it's really expensive even if aftermarket (circa $4-500).

With my previous car I was comfortable with reprogramming a new key myself by following some instructions, so if I had a fob with instructions I could program it myself and then get the key cut at bunnings or similar.

Thanks
Mike

  • This might be an option, however I'm not 100% sure. I've asked the seller.

  • This listing states that if you only have 2 working keys you can reprogramming using simple DIY instructions, but if you only have 0-1 keys left you need to use "diagnostic scan tool"

Like you said, it's a pretty easy job to DIY the fob. Buy yourself the appropriate fob off AliExpress, use the key you already have to programme the fob and get the blade cut at a locksmith. The problem/expensive part is getting the transponder programmed to the immobiliser, however you can probably clone the chip you already have and use that. You can also buy the cloning device and chips on AliExpress and it will likely still work out cheaper, but if you're in Auckland I'm happy to try cloning it for you.

Source: I DIYed my Mazda6 fob because the dealer wanted $600 and a locksmith wanted $300.

EDIT: Just saw your links, you even need the same key fob I used 😂

    • I'm in Wellington.

Got link for cloning process / equipment?

      • PM'd you.

    • Hi ABCDEFG,

Do you have a link to, or are you able to post, detailed instructions on what we would need to purchase from AliExpress and then what to do to clone a key. I have two working remote keys already, but need a third (one for me, one for my wife, and now one for my daughter so she doesn't borrow mine!)

      Thanks,

      Alan.

Will write something up over the weekend 👍

        • That would be great - thank you!

Adding a third key is easy. U can just use the diy instructions no need to clone the key or use odbd device. You just need to cut a key and then follow the diy procedure.

  • I'm in the same boat as you—I only have one working key for my Gen 2 Mazda 6.
I've been procrastinating on this for a while, but my plan is to buy the appropriate fob from AliExpress (make sure it has the correct transponder chip) and then use FORScan (2-month free trial) with a compatible OBD2 adapter (a cheap Bluetooth one might also work).
I'm not sure if this will work on your Mazda 2, but reading through the release notes might provide some insight: https://forscan.org/changes_history.html.

  • The fob bit will likely be a easy one (you can link one to most fords and Mazda's with a set of instructions of the "turn on/open door/do this X number of times" type, no "programming" necessary).

If you want to replace the (maybe**) coded key it might be harder. As you generally need two keys to do it on the car.

Otherwise ou need to get the key linked to the car (note - you tell the car to accept the key, you don't "programme" the key). Yes you could try to get one "cloned" - but I wouldn't personally.

** Assuming your car even has the security module for this - if it's a Japanesr import its highly possible it does not. Don't spend money on "programming" until you've tried (either just get a key cut and try it, or take the chip out of your current key and try it - all keys have chips whether the car has the module or not FYI).

    • You can buy both keys (check they have the chip) and fobs from AliExpress BTW.

And then chip is a little black bit of plastic about 5mmx3mm . You'll find it behind the Mazda Logo on the key. Don't lose it! Tape it back in well.
(If you want to be really cheap you could just tape it to your ignition….)
