Looking for a new mattress and ensemble - prefer something under $1k NZD

Any idea of any specials on at the moment? Preference is to buy something today in the Wellington area.

  • Were you after anything specific? Size?

You can always find cheap beds, but most of the time they are junk.

I'll keep an eye out though.

  • OP what size are you after? Farmers has 50% off Sleepyhead balance today only but they are still $1599 for a queen.

  • Smiths City has a few specials on. For example:

Sleepyhead Classic Paedicrest Queen Bed $1499 $799.

  • Thanks for the suggestions guys - ended up getting this from beds r us on Thorndon Quay ($1379 with free delivery)

we were after a nice pocket spring firm bed and tested many shops along the Thorndon Quay strip in Wellington.

The below was a really good bed, but could not delivery until late Dec:

The problem I find with all the bed companies is they always have sales on and cannot trust their retail pricing… So really I have no idea if I actually choice cheapie or not

    • The delivery cost itself is a good deal, but it looks nice.

And another thing about furniture stores is their salespeople will push you hard to upgrade, while most of the other sectors aren't quite as bad.

I was looking for a new bed recently, although I ended up getting a trip to Japan instead, but one thing I did was I always noted down product models/numbers to compare, or I got the salesperson to do it for me. A lot of companies would likely offer you a similar deal if you preferred one other the other.

  • Neither of those beds seem to have a split base. My dble matress is currently on the floor bc our double base wouldn't fit up the stairwell.

Therefore I'm looking at a double or queen slat combo or split base design.

    • Towards Christmas there will likely be a number of retailers dumping stock, will keep an eye out.

  • Just bought a new one for us today, got the Radiance Super King Bed by King Koil for $1799 pickup from Gerry Harvey.

The salesman was good too, not pushy, had a chat to him about deals, Amazon, ChoiceCheapies, politics, and a bunch of other stuff for about half an hour. I grabbed one one of these too, for $170, I wanted him to get some commission, and I wanted to get one anyway.

They are made to order in Auckland though, so have to wait a few weeks to pick it up.

  • cool. i haven't been in to look yet, my GF is away in vietnam for another week, so thought i'd just wait till she gets back, don't feel like bed shopping on my own. Ideally I want split base with drawers underneath. Having an extra 4 drawers in the bedroom without taking up any additional space is pretty good.

    • They have sales all the time, I was keen on made in NZ and 10 year warranty though, but the prices are nothing special.

Unfortunately the guy at Smith City wouldn't accept our current mattress, 30 years old and covered in chewing gum and stains for trade in!

Having an extra 4 drawers in the bedroom without taking up any additional space is pretty good.

I had the same view of that, but the difference of $300 didn't really justify it for what we got. It will turn into a spare bed in a few years and we'll get a nicer one anyway.

  • I get cost price at Noel Leeming, Harvey Norman and Smith City. Although "cost price" is a bit 'BS' because cost price doesn't include the store's bulk buying discounts or manufacturer rebates, so sometimes cost price is dearer than sale price.

NoeL Leeming - Gives cost price to Medical Assurance Society members.
Harvey Norman - Gives cost price to a lot of government department people and hospital staff.
Smiths City - Gives cost price if you own shares in the company.

    • Nice, has it been of any real benefit at all or just something that you have access to?

  • Slight benefit. If you want something and don't want to wait for a sale or shop around it's cheaper. I bought 2x electric snuggle blankets for ~$50, retail was ~$100. Some things never go on sale. I was gonna get wharfedale speakers and the rear stands were about $3-400, but at cost price they were about $180. I ended up getting tower rears, so didn't use the discount.

It's basically good for high margin products that don't tend to go on sale.

    • Sweet, although for lower margin items that would virtually have no benefit.
