Just wanna say thank you so much for posting a similar deal last year!

Had an awesome time in Japan and would recommend anyone that’s booking to get at least a 24 hour layover to enjoy Fiji as well

awesome! Thank you for the comment. I love Japan, have been fortunate to visit 4 times, and it only seems to get better.

Is there an option to control the layover length when booking?

      • From memory when chosing flights you should have options of one with shorter or longer layovers. I thought it was interesting staying over but it wasn't for me so I wouldn't do it again xD although it was a good way to break the long travel.

Any chance you could give some basic instructions? Don't think I've found where the option is

  • amazing stuff. thanks for posting

would you advise if you predict any sales for late october flights to japan (you have better educated guesses so just wanting your opinion 😅 thanks!)

    • Complete guess - but the above ones to October are pretty great, however looking back at my last few posts, they seem to run these ~quarterly, so it's possible in July there may be some extra good October deals. No inside info tho.

  • For anyone passing through Nadi airport: go to the Fiji Airways lounge. I cannot recommend it enough, easily my favourite lounge I’ve been to anywhere in the world.

    • Is there a fee to get in?

      • Can be free with certain credit card perks or holding a Business Class ticket, but in the past I’ve also bought a day ticket via the Trip.com app (discounted if I remember correctly). Unsure if you need to have booked your flight through the app or if they offer day passes for sale to anyone.

  • What are some good hotels in Nadi?

Depends a little on your budget/expectations. I've personally stayed at Smuggler's Cove next to Ramadan which I thought would be along a lovely tropical beach. Turns out the beaches along the populated areas in mainland Fiji aren't exactly poster-worthy. There was also propositions from locals for all sorts of uncouth activities as I was walking to the bus into town - no clue how safe I would be had I decided to partake.

Denerau Island has your fairly stereotypical resorty style… resorts… with some fake-ish beaches. You can't really go wrong with Sofitel, Hilton, Westin etc. there, but it's definitely a more luxury option that goes against the Cheapies ethos for a quick stopover…

About an hour's drive away is the Marriott, which is one of those resorts that you see in brochures and travel videos with full apartments on stilts in the water - but it's a man-made lagoon and again there's no true beach outside of this, nor a coral reef or pleasant sea experience.

There's some airbnbs in the area too, the one I stayed at looked like a whole villa with pool, but turned out to be rooms in an apartment complex of at least 4-5 places with a shared pool. Not terrible, but a bit average - lovely people though, so hard to fault.

I can't speak to the hotels around the airport, maybe someone else has some tips there.

Nadi town itself isn't exactly great. The markets are alright for a quick wonder, but most stores are just tourist traps with pushy salesmen.

I have stayed in the Tokatoka and the Gateway hotel during a japan trip stopover, both are opposite the airport (very short walk, or free shuttle bus).

They are nothing special (not amazing, not bad), but relatively cheap and easy for a quick stop over. I wouldn't stay there for more than a night, as there isn't much in the area.

They do both have pools (and waterslides, great for kids), bar and restaurant.

  • How are they able to do it cheaper than Fiji's official website, I don't understand? Are all their partners legit as we need to go through them when make a booking e.g. Trip.com, Gotogate, Budgetair, Flightnetwork and Mytrip.com?

      A write up here: https://www.beatthatflight.com.au/index.php/about/

tl;dr - Online travel agencies undercut the airline price-wise, and then try to make it up with extras like insurance, big fees for extra luggage, etc. Also their customer service is usually a bit shite compared to an airline.

Have personally used trip, gotogate, and mytrip without issues.

  • Woohoo just booked (from Wellington) please note these cheaper fares don't normally include checked baggage but more than happy to add- $1209.72 incl cc fees is cheaper than the Qantas ones earlier and I get a stay in Fiji too!
