Bit of a laugh.

Someone asked me if I could offer Afterpay on a Trademe listing so I looked up how to go about it.

You need to register for it and the way they send you an activation code is by sending you a 1c payment with the activation code as a reference.

  1. Go to My Trade Me.
  2. Select Sell with Afterpay under 'My balances'.
  3. Follow the prompts, then enter your bank details and select Save.
  4. We'll pay $0.01 into your bank account, with a six-digit reference code (allow 2 business days). Find this in your bank statement.
  5. Once you've found the code, go to My Trade Me – select Activate under 'My balances'.
  6. Enter the code to verify your bank account.

    Reminder that actually having Afterpay as an option on your auction costs just under 5% in fees - "A transaction fee of 4.95% is automatically deducted from the total payment amount (including shipping)." Of course you don't have to use it after you get your 1c, but just getting the information out there :)

      I'm not going to offer it unless they'd be willing to cover the fee. The 7.9% success fee is already enough. I'm not even willing to offer ping because they charge 1.95%.

        Add the Ping charge to your asking price, it's the best method for payment.

        Just personally I'll skip over some auctions if the seller doesn't offer it

          Agreed, I won't buy any $$$ or fragile item without it. Covers both buyer and seller too.

          My trick is when selling, I price in Ping fee but offer a 2% percent discount to pay with bank deposit.

          In saying that, TM done (profanity) up by not making all payment related fees (Ping, Afterpay etc) apply as cost extras to buyer at point of payment, not rely on seller pricing-in. So dumb.

      That being said having ping makes your life as a seller way easier if selling tens of items and afterpay is great if you have items like apple products or game consoles where even people without much money pay substantial prices for them if they can pay in installments(you as the seller get the full amount upfront and afterpay takes the risk).

      Often with afterpay I will put up 2 listings, one with the price I want without afterpay and one with it for 3-5% more depending on the payment methods for the first listing.

        Surely that's against TradeMe rules to advertise the same item twice. Not that I care but you have to be careful.

          Not if you are selling several of the same thing. As long as you have the items to sell, you're ok.

            @beatthatflight: Nope. Even if you have multiples you technically can't list more than one. You would probably get away with it though, if you listed 2 at different prices it might be considered different items.

            T&Cs "On Trade Me Marketplace, you may only have one listing for all identical items for sale at any one time."

        Yeah I find ping is generally worth it as the buyer often pays at the point of sale so I can get on with sending it rather than checking my bank account and having to chase up.

        I personally never offer afterpay but still get requests, even on items that are $30, which is a bit sad.

      If you were to price your time at even minimum wage, I think it costs more than any gain. I think it is cool to be able to offer afterpay though so thats my incentive!
