Anyone ordered pocketknives from USA and managed to get them shipped here?

I liked the price of some pocketknives and multi-tools I found in various places in USA. None of them seem to ship here citing restrictions on "weapons" This seems to be a blanket ban thing. Perhaps because I am mainly looking in specialist knife retailers. For one that I particularly liked I even tried inputting a NZPost youshop address. Still no go. It recognised it as a reshipper. Plus I dunno if youshop itself would reject it as well.

Has anyone managed to order things like leatherman multitools from USA? If so how?

  • NZ customs doesn't appear to ban import of standard pocketknives.

Some weapons are prohibited items which means you can’t bring them into New Zealand. Firearms require a permit from New Zealand Police.
You need a New Zealand Police permit to bring firearms (including airguns) and ammunition into New Zealand. You must get the permit before they arrive in New Zealand.
Restricted weapons such as stun devices and pepper spray require a permit issued by the New Zealand Police.
Some weapons are prohibited items, and can only be imported if you have a consent to import issued by the New Zealand Police.

  • Yeah thanks RockCartel I know that, it's just that the US retailers seem to put blanket bans on everything. Can't blame them I guess. Would be pretty difficult to separate out which specific knives can be sent where with so many different countries and restrictions in the world.

  • Years ago I ordered one and had it delivered it through NZPost YouShop. Didn't have any issues.

    • Can you remember where you ordered it?

      • No sorry, it was a random American retailer that otherwise didn't ship internationally.

  • I got a leatherman type tool successfully shipped here from a retailer in the US in May 2021.

I brought it new from a retailer, I think from ebay, that would only ship to the US. I then used Planet Express to ship the item to me. Planet Express seems to be better than youshop and will ship more items. I've only ever sent one item through Planet Express, but, it went very smoothly.

I do have a referral code to planet express if you want it but I'm not sure what it gives you, haven't really looked into that. PM me if you want it.

Edit - Just checked, here is what it says about knifes. Looks like it's fine, but, you have restricted carriers you can use.

Knives, Blades, Sword ect cannot ship via DHL, Planet Mail, Yamato, and USPS anywhere in the world.
Knives, Blades, Sword ect cannot be shipped to Australia, or the UK with any of the shipping methods available.

    • I bought spring assisted fast opening pocket knives off Ebay a couple of years ago no problem. Both from USA and China. One was actually a push button switch blade, got rid of that as they're illegal

  • I've had no issue getting some from Amazon US in previous years.
