Wellington Recommendations and Tips

We are planning to stay in wellington on the 25th for 1 night to farewell a family member who is flying overseas. There will be 3 adults and 3 kids ages 1 to 5. Looking for any accommodation recommendations preferably cheapish and kid friendly as well as cheap things to do with the kids while there. Would love to hear any recommendations or tips. (Decision to travel and stay was very last minute, a nights stay sounded like a better idea than travelling at midnight with kids for an early flight)

Cheap kids activity: can walk not requiring car

    Goto the waterfront
    - Oriental parade/water front is a nice walk.
    - there is the beach and there is a park on the beach with playground and ice-cream
    - tepapa on the waterfront is free
    - capital E on the waterfront is free
    - Wellington museum (next to capital E) is also free and is good to visit.

If you go on a Sunday there is Sunday market with cheap Street food if weather is good.

There are excellent kids huge playground outdoor parks but they are in lower Hutt (Avalon), upper Hutt (Maidstone) and Porirua (aotea Lagoon).

I live in Wellies, and I still go to Te Papa about 10 times as year by request of the kids (5 & 9), and we've been living here for 5 years. Depending on the weather, you could then go on a short-ish walk to Oriental Bay to the beach/playground and get an ice cream.
