There are 2 legends currently in the NZ aviation scene…. Fiji Air and you. Thanks op.

However it is a bit heartbreaking to see some of the deals our Aussie mates get.

    • Thank you, you're very kind!

  • Wow thats a deal and a half , i did this route about 4 years ago it was a bargain and cant fault it for the price at all. Highly recommend and didnit thanks to OP!

    • tokyo or sapporo?

    • Cheers! Envious, I miss Japan and it's been over 5 years for me. Maybe with the kids when they're a bit older…

  • Is booing via mytrip.com the only way or can you book those prices with Fiji Airways?

    • also would like to know

  • Are you guys worried about the influence of nuclear disposal?

      No.

You're not worried that if you go and eat sashimi at Japan, the fish there would be contaminated?

  • OP Can you share your thoughts on MyTrip having a million dodgy reviews online? Doesn't seem safe to book through them

    • So beatthatflight is a search site, as you've worked out - it looks at OTAs (online travel agencies) like trip.com, mytrip.com, gotogate, etc to find their cheapest prices.

OTAs tend to be able to provide lower prices than direct because they make their money in other ways - addons of insurance, or txt updates, or extra baggage fees, or name change fees (which might be free directly with an airline).

They're still travel agents, however, and much like if you booked through house of travel or flight center, you still get a PNR (booking reference) with the airline.

If the airline cancels, it's still their responsibility to move you to a different flight. If you're wanting something different yourself, however, making your own changes to the dates, you have to go through the agent.

An example: I was flying Tauranga->Auckland->Chch with AirNZ, booked through one of these (Gotogate IIRC). Got to Auckland and it was covid chaos, mass cancellations, no flights for a day and a bit. AirNZ still a) changed us to a new flight b) paid for a hotel and c) paid for taxi to/from the hotel.

The issue with a lot of the online reviews for the OTAs is - if your flight goes well, you tend to remember the airline - eg AirNZ in the example above. If it goes badly - eg if you need to change your passport number or something, you have to deal with the OTAs. And one thing they do have is notoriously bad customer call centers/email. So that can be a nightmare (and thus the many angry online reviews). But if you're careful to make sure you're booking everything correctly, and don't have any hiccups, I've had very few issues with them - the only major one being a covid credit (thanks Qantas).

      Hope that helps!

baggage is $160 per leg on mytrip, but direct through FIji Airways its only about $60. I seem to be able to get cheaper direct through Fiji airways

  • Whats the best way for me to search cheap deals for mulit-city flight if I am completely flexible on dates
e.g. keen to go Auckland -> Singapore…. few days later Singapore -> Hong Kong…….few days later Macau to Auckland?

  • Bugg*r, looks like I’m too late - Auckland flights jumped up to ~$1,300.

  • Hey is there anyway to rerun this again to view the latest cheapiest flights?
    THanks!
