Travel Insurance via AmEx Credit Card

Hi all, I have a question about credit card travel insurance, specifically with regard to my Amex card. Last time I had travel insurance through the ASB platinum card, I realized they had excess on the flight cancellations component. So, this time, when I paid for my ticket with my Amex card, I specifically asked for the policy to check what the excess is, and I found there are excess amounts for a few major components, such as $250 for medical emergency, $250 for travel cancellation (unrefundable deposit etc), $100 (or $250 for laptop) for baggage damage etc.

I went back to Amex/Chubb insurance and inquired if I could pay a higher premium to reduce or remove the excess, but I was told it's not possible. Do you think it's worth considering another insurance company that offers lower or no excess on the policy? For example, Southern Cross is charging $180 for no excess or $100 excess for the trip

  • Isn't paying the excess fee still cheaper than taking out another travel insurance? I have claimed through Amex twice for missing connecting flights in LAX. They didn't charge me any excess for both times. My parents and brother went with southern cross, they all had to pay $100 (or $150?) excess. Maybe ask Amex to send through your policy document and read through it before you make the decision.

    • It's $250 excess vs. $180 a new insurance though? But good to know about the no excess for missing connecting flights, I might have missed that. I've got a copy of their policy, it's generally $250 per major component e.g. medical emergency, or baggage damage etc

You might not need it if everything goes smoothly. Every Amex card has different insurance policies, make sure you read yours.

Have claimed with Amex and Southern Cross in the past. Amex has always been, relatively, hassle free and quickly settled.

Amex insurance for secondary cardholders doesn’t give full cover though so watch for that depending on your situation.

    • Thanks. Yeah I'm a supplementary card holder, but they assured me as I'm the spouse of the primary card holder, I'll have the same cover as the primary card holder.

    • Likewise, made a claim, paid out no issues. Few hoops to jump through but the are all the same (usually providing proof of travel / delays etc)
