Microchip Cat Door recommendations

Hi there I am looking at getting a microchip cat door, needs to be on the larger scale as one of my cats is big. Any recommendations for brand and or type?

  • I’ve got the Surepet Pet door, good size and fits my cat and miniature poodle. You set up which microchips you want to allow in, and can set curfew times for when they can come in and out.
Animates sell it, it seems to get not so great reviews but I’ve found the surepet customer service really helpful and will sort out any problems and send out new parts straight away. Animates have them on sale every now and again so I’d recommend waiting for the sale.

Had my sureflap for around 12 years. Can't fault it. It is probably the original/small one. One of my cats has gotten larger but she can still squeeze through. If you have large cats to start with you might go for the larger one that I think they make now.

Only problem I had was when a Trade Me buyer decided to shove some money through it. Would have taken a bit of force but they managed to snap off the manual locking tab. Don't use that (It locks all cats out) so not much of an issue.

Very occasionally the flap opens right up and doesn't close. Usually that's a sign it needs a clean. They quickly get grubby with all that cat fur rubbing against them multiple times a day.

Batteries last around 2 months (rechargeable eneloop) or 6 months quality alkaline disposable.

Another vote for the sureflap (and their customer service), but definitely recommend the larger size "pet door" model; our fat cats much happier after we switched. Weirdly, it uses C size batteries that last FOREVER.

It's so nice not having to deal with rampant toms getting into the house anymore!

  • agree regarding the pet door model wish it had dual scan on both sides but the batteries last significantly longer its more reliable.
