It's wild that hand sanitiser has an expiry on it, seeing as it's like 70% alcohol.

I know multiple companies trying to get rid of thousands (and in one case, tends of thousands) of litres of the stuff, they all tried selling it, they then tried giving it away, and now they're going to have to pay to dispose of it.

If it didn't fake expire, you could just shove it in a container for the next inevitable pandemic, but once it "expires" no business will touch it and consumers ask questions on whether it works.

    • Yes I saw an auction house trying to shift some of those 1000L IBC containers of the stuff. "Value" was over $50,000. I don't think they could even get a bid of $1.

        1. Buy up old hand sanitiser stock
        2. Set up clandestine distillery running 9pm-midnight on Contact's Good Nights plan
        3. Bottle the result as Vodka/fuel/IPA/???
        4. Profit!

What's the distillery part for? You won't get any better than 70% with a home still, and you'd probably burn your house down trying.

And I think hand sanitiser is usually "denatured" AKA ruined with stuff that's "undrinkable"

Fuel part is good, though, can just cut to the chase and go straight for the fuel part, burn it in a stirling engine.

Not too often you could get tens of thousands of litres of free fuel, but I can't quite think of a way to continuously feed it in a usable manner, and what would be good on an open flame like that.

Clearly I've never done this before 🤣

    • I got a bunch when Countdown were giving them away last year

  • Anyone got any good general other uses for it? I have been using it do sanitise phones and tablets, but according to google not a particularly great idea. It's a shame you can't tip it in your car or lawnmower. Or can you?

I use them to clean paint, which is really good because of the alcohol base.

  • can be used as fuel for lanterns
