[Sharetank] Unleaded 91 $2.789/L - 95 $2.979/L (Rangiora), Diesel $2.229/L (Rolleston) @ Z

170

You know what time it is…

The deals are very few and far between these days for fuel discounts…

Aucklanders rejoice as the cheapest 91 you have is two Gulls and Costco cheaper by a few cents.

Overall, I classify this Sharetank deal as a BUY RATING.

Not Financial Advice - Depends on the area you travel, and what the prices around you normally are. If it works out to be cheaper in general then the other sites, and there is a margin of say 15cpl difference, then one could argue its a good time to.

It's cause NPD Rangiora 3km away is 12.3c cheaper at $2.666 for 91 and 17.3c cheaper for 95 at $2.806

    • 100% on the money. If you live there, pays to buy from NPD, but if you are travelling around New Zealand, it is a very different story!

    Thanks, just bought.

What method(s) do you use to check for the cheapest price? I tried to contact the Gaspy developer to see if I could get access to the underlying data, so I can filter/parse the data myself, but he never responded.

My current trick is to apply a 100 cent discount to Z in Gaspy, which basically puts all of the Z stations at the top of the list in your search result, because they'd be cheaper than all other competitors by 100 cents. I then go through the list and favourite the top 10 cheapest ones. Then I just look at my Favourites list to easily get a glance of the cheapest Z station across the country. However, there are a few that aren't on my favourites (such as Rangiora, which as per your post is the cheapest for today). I guess I could go and add every Z station to Favourites, but that's a pain.

I have gaspy on 100km radius and then go Auckland(see more), Rotorua(see more), Napier(see more), Christchurch(see more) etc.

Probably a difficult way to do it, but it works for me…

      • Yeah that's what I used to do and it's painful.

If you add the Z stations to favourites, you can see them easily in one list without having to change location.

Also, if you look at the top 5 cheapest petrol locations of the day, you can quickly filter to that location to look at the Z petrol prices:
        https://www.gaspy.nz/stats.html

It typically works because the petrol stations around the same area would have to compete for the lower price in order to get people to buy them.

The fool-proof method is to literally go through ALL the Z stations in Gaspy and favourite them. Then, just look at favourites and sort by price. Everything is sorted in a single list. But ain't nobody got time to do that lol.

I tried to reverse engineer Gaspy app and found this Firebase database used by the dev. Unfortunately, I don't have access and I don't plan on hacking or anything. But here's the database in case anyone is interested. This is all open data, since the Android apk file can be easily decompiled and looked at:

In his defense, he probably knows he's sitting on a gold mine of data. Opensourcing it puts him at risk of devaluing his platform.

Even the API that comes back on https://www.gaspy.nz/stats.html is a litte obfuscated. One thing you can see in the response is that it is returning more than what is displayed on the page, but it's not like it's the whole dataset :P

        • I went through and favourited all the Z stations. Surprisingly it didn’t actually take that long, maybe 20-30 minutes of determination, but once it’s done it’s done. Now it’s super easy to have them ordered by price and never miss a deal. The only annoying thing is make sure to turn off the price change notifications for each station.

Seems like it's harder to use location spoofing with the new Z app as well

  • UPDATED with Diesel

  • $2.209 D at Timaru

  • This pricing is still valid 😁
