Cheapest brand new car

looking to buy my next car, have been searching and noticed that some relatively good 2nd hand cars all above $10k. I wonder if the MG3 is the cheapest brand new car I can find in NZ now? from around $20k with 7year unlimited km warranty.

@scott you seem to have a good eye on new vehicles. Any thoughts on the above.

Last time I checked, the MG3 was the cheapest new car in NZ (but recent changes to Clean car fees have impacted this)

Just looked it up again MG MG3 AUTO CORE $20,490 + ORC. per the below, Clean car fees are $2127.50.

      https://rightcar.govt.nz/detail?q=g42337

Personally, I would steer clear of the MG 3, for the reason of very high fuel consumption for the class. right car lists it at 7.5L/100km.

I think when the clean car discounts / fees are considered, Suzuki takes the crown. Both their Ignis GLX Manual & Swift GL manual, are currently discounted by $1500 to $21490+ ORC. Both have a zero clean car fee. And they are rated at 5.2 & 5.1L/100km respectively.

Personally I would be looking for a used Toyota hybrid (Prius / aqua / fielder hybrid), or if OP has access to plug in at home, something use like a Holden volt, BYD E6, leaf 40kWh etc.

      • How could I forget the Mirage? @acrobat is correct.

$19,990 + ORC, Zero clean car fee. Auto (CVT) too.

Should note that it is substantially smaller than the MG3

The Mirage is a very old car, it was ANCAP tested back in 2013 (5 star's), and while it has been face lifted twice since then, the underlying design is a decade old, and hasn't been required to face harder modern crash tests. (should note the MG 3 is also old, was NCAP tested in 2014).

In some markets, the 6th Gen Colt is being replaced with a rebadged 5th Gen Renault Clio, so these could be among the last.

That said, if one wanted a cheap, new, auto car, as long as one was OK with the smaller size, it would be my pick over the MG 3. At least the fuel economy is respectable at 5.5L/100km.

  • Whats its ANCAP safety rating? Couldn't find any mention on its website.

  • mitsubishi mirage is a bit cheaper at $19990+ORC

    • I don't know why someone would buy a small new car like this when there hare so many second hand cars for less, many that are better in everyway. I have a Mazda 3 which is better in everyway, that is about 7 years old and still feels brand new. Yet the second hand price is lower than this.

Personally if you are after a low budget car, go for a 2nd Toyota hybrid or any popular hybrid. Frankly getting a cheapest new car will end up costing a lot more in long run. Fuel economy for starter. Also, you will feel lot to be desired in it.

    • The biggest cost with a cheap new car will be the depreciation. Fuel is a relatively small cost for many, even with the increased price. Yes Toyota hybrids are good and I would buy one over a EV at the moment, due to the high cost of a really good EV with good range.

      • Yes. Absolutely true. Almost all cars lose on average around 5% of its value as soon as it is driven out of dealership. This is not the case for 2nd's.

  • just did searching on Trademe. Try to search year 2022 - 2023 under 20K, you will find mainly two cars, MG3 and Mitsubishi Mirage. Mirage is the cheapest new car @ 19990+orc.

  • I'd say sticker price isn't the whole picture here, you really need to look at the cost of ownership and factor in how you'll pay for it. Going for a greener car may cost more dollars but with 0-1% green loans available they can be reduced in price, if paying cash put the cash in a term deposit or offset your home debt to make extra money back, if you were financing 1% will likely be less than whatever other finance option you were going to take.

Petrol savings for a more economical car will also add up quickly the more KMs you do. Going hybrid or even full ev may pan out to be cheaper over the time you own the car.

  • Parents got a kia picanto and it's been awesome for around town. Wasn't much more to get the safety enabled option.
Not cheap on gas though but excellent for tight turning circle into parking spots etc.
Only thing really lacking was radar cruise control.

Anyhow, point is I'd consider spending another grand or two to upspec away from the absolute base model.
