Dyson Stick Vacuum Battery Replacement Advice

The in-law's Dyson V8 Animal stick vacuum has just died and they've asked me to replace the battery. Where have people purchased their Dyson battery replacements?

Aliexpress definitely has the best value in terms of battery capacity vs price, they've got a 4800mah for $60~ + $20~ shipping, but not estimated to arrive until 5th of Nov, a good 2 months away. I've also been quite hit and miss with Aliexpress in the past with items not arriving (although those items that never arrived were cheap items less than $10).

Has anyone purchased a Dyson battery from Aliexpress, what was your experience like?

Other places do sell the replacement batteries too, like Kogan, or Trademe, or batterymate.co.nz (although battermate said it wouldn't ship to my NZ address), but just not bang for buck compared to Aliexpress.

Cheers

  • How long have you had your Dyson for?

I had my V6 for ~3 years, then for the sake of trying just contact Dyson for it and they send the replacement battery for free. This was back in 2020. Then in 2021 the battery died again, contacted them again and replaced it again under warranty. .

    • In-laws probably had it for 3-4 years now, need to dig out the receipt. Worth calling up Dyson and giving them a try I guess. I'll give them a go, thanks :)

I've still got my V6 from this post too (https://www.cheapies.nz/node/21895)

I've been lucky with it so far, battery is still all good, touch wood.

      • I'd say give them a shot, you've got nothing to lose anyway. Worst case they'll recommend you to buy the battery from the shop, and you can just reject that.

From memory I don't have a receipt as well, and they just go from the serial number of the vacuum.

I would be very suspect that you are actually getting what is advertised with batteries on AliExpress

  • buy a dewalt/makita converter and use the battery from your power tools or buy one from bunnings/mitre10.

  • I bought a battery from Dyson for $129 in 2020 for an old V8 that I got in 2017, no issues…

PSA for everyone who buys a Dyson stick vacuum.

Put a reminder in your phone for 2 years time, there is a 2 year battery guarantee so make sure by that time you've let them know your battery isn't holding charge and they will send you a free spare.

    • on the 2nd replacement (after I got the battery replaced under warranty), they said that the battery warranty has changed to 1 year.

This is for my V6 though and I haven't checked their T&C if it applies for the newer one.

      • It still says 2 years on their website.

        https://www.dyson.co.nz/products/vacuum-cleaners/battery-car…

TBH if you're paying $500 plus for a vacuum cleaner the CGA would surely apply at at least 2 years of normal use, products have to be durable.

        • "…a 2-year initial guarantee that includes the battery."

That's what they said initially, then on the second warranty (after replacing the battery once), they said the replacement battery warranty is 12-months. But perhaps that's just the CSR that said it to me..

EDIT: found the statement on the web: https://www.dyson.co.nz/support/replacement-parts/replacemen…

"Dyson offers a 2-year guarantee on all cordless machines, including the vacuum cleaner battery, and a 1-year guarantee on all batteries purchased as a spare part. If your machine or part is within its guarantee period, we'll send a replacement battery to you free of charge should your existing battery not be working to specifications. If you're an owner get in touch with our Dyson Experts and we will be happy to help."

  • Only battery replacements I have done through Aliexpress have been for the old Ps3 controllers - worked a treat too - but for something high drain like a vacuum cleaner I would be suspicious on the actual claims for the battery…no real basis other than a perception of you often get what you pay for with batteries - if its cheap, there is often a reason. On the other hand, if its that much cheaper it might be worth throwing a few dollars at it and seeing what you come out with :D

    gambler :D

I decided to go with a genuine Dyson (from Dyson) rather than an aftermarket. While I am a hardened cheapie batteries are just one of those things where original/factory is best IMO

  • I bought one direct from Dyson, who were very helpful, BUT I DIDN'T NEED IT.

After I followed a YouTube video for a "deep clean" my vacuum started behaving like new.

The video showed a billion little places where hair clogged up hard to see mechanisms. The difference was amazing.

Dyson should be able to help you, but if not I would recommend buying a replacement battery CASE from AliExpress (or wherever) but buying quality battery CELLS locally from 18650batteries.nz.

    Good luck.

    • Yeah I definitely recommend replacing all your filters (even with Temu/AliExpress versions). It makes the vacuum run much better if you have had it for a while

  • Thanks for the feedback everyone, seems like Aliexpress is a no go. Talking with Dyson now and hopefully get a new battery from them, will update on the result

    • If that doesn't work. As mentioned above get a makita/dewalt/others adapter from Aliexpress and use power tool battery.

  • Thanks, you guys reminded me to get my free battery. I had purchased our V15 1/8/2021 and had no issues getting a free battery from them over facebook chat.

Well worth digging out the receipt & trying your luck, I’ve had 2 batteries replaced (outside of warranty) free of charge. The service is exceptional, fast to answer calls etc.

    • Don't even need the receipt, just the model number.
They registered it on my behalf over facebook chat (asking for my details etc) and it was updated to have been purchased from Noel Leeming with the date and everything. They must keep good records themselves.

Update: Successfully got a new battery from Dyson! (even though it was over the 2 year warranty period), as a one time courtesy so YMMV.

As others have said great customer service from Dyson. Have dealt with them in the past and it was a positive experience too.

Almost feel like it's quite rare to experience this level of customer service these days. A lot of companies could learn a thing or two from Dyson!

    Thanks everyone :)

Nice. One of the reason you pay premium for Dyson. All of this is somewhat part of the purchase price.

Great! Also another reason why I am willing to consider spending for another dyson when my V6 goes kaput!

Check back in a year's time perhaps to see if the battery goes "bad" which under the 12 month replacement battery warranty so you get another battery

    • What did you have to tell them? I’m going through 101 questions and demanding videos of the machine.

      • Maybe your Dyson CS Rep has been reading this Cheapies thread…

Maybe they have had a sudden influx of customers complaining about their batteries

  • +1 on getting a replacement battery out of warranty (Vac is 2 years 8 months old). Used the live chat on their website and although the battery I need is OOS, I'll get a new one shipped to me as soon as its back.

    • Mine is 2 years 7 months… awaiting their reply again.
