Easy Subjects to Study to Get Student ID

Do people have recommendations on some courses you can study while working full time, so that you can get student ID?

Ideally should be easy, free and somewhat interesting.

Currently I'm studying Maori Tikanga at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa. The course is taught in English. To pass the course, you basically have to fill in four workbooks which takes 2 hours each. If you read the textbook then you will find all the answers you need. It's study at home with 4 online classes. It's pretty interesting and you do learn a lot about Maori culture. It comes with student ID valid for 2 years. You get a NZQA level 3 cert you can put on your CV.

Anyone else have courses they can recommend?

OP: Was that Maori Tikanga at Te Wānanga o Aotearoa course free to you?

      Yes

        Cool - Thanks.

No idea why someone objected to me asking if it was free :-)

I'm curious about which student ID benefit is valuable enough to justify studying.

    • If it's free and you're only after student benefits, who said you had to study? 😉

But it sounds like OP is genuinely interested in learning, and the student ID is just an added benefit. Good on them.

      • Absolutely, learning for fun is a great way to spend time. However, "Easy Subjects to Study to get Student ID" suggests that the student ID aspect of the deal may be more than window dressing 😂 And I'm not knocking wanting to take advantage of student deals either; it's Cheapies, loopholes are a way of life. But it seems like OP is putting in a non-trivial amount of work which is why I'm curious.

        • It's 8 hours of work for a NZQA approved qualification plus 2 years of student discounts, plus the course is genuinely interesting, totally worth it.

I'd say both are positive benefits - no downside?

    • If you're thinking of buying a Samsung device, I think students can get 20% off for many of their products which is a pretty significant discount. Plus even random certifications can be handy when applying for jobs - even if it has zero relation to the role, sometimes hiring managers can get curious enough about them to interview you and give you a in so it's not like it's wasted.

Recommend checking out the below link

    https://www.openpolytechnic.ac.nz/study-with-us/fees-and-fun…

Scroll to the very bottom of the page for the fee free courses.

"Student Card" which comes with a great range of benefits like 12c off NPD fuel (great for south island).

Also allows for Microsoft Office full package for free.

  • OP: do you get access to a ac.nz email address?

    • Yes

    • Yep you sure do

  • @36wish is this the course you're referring to?
    https://www.twoa.ac.nz/nga-akoranga-our-programmes/maori-and…

It does state "You’ll also need to participate in learning activities designed to enhance your learning for approximately 27 hours per week (on average)"

That seems like a big commitment for those of us working full time - is that how long you spend studying?

I like the look of this course (12hrs per week, distance learning) but it's full :-(

      This one

Take no notice of the "11.5 hours per week", it's more like 11.5 hours per course.

      • How long does it take to read the textbook? I take it the reading was in addition to the 8hours to do the workbooks.
I am currently doing a Māori language course and keen to learn more about Māori culture but do not want to over commit with limited free time

        • They do give you lots of books to read but they are not necessary or required to complete the homework. So you can read them at your leisure after you graduate if you like.

      • Thanks 36, this looks really interesting, i'm keen to do it, i'm hoping I will have spare time.

      • I tried to enrol as this seems interesting but got an email back that "the monthly intakes in your area for now full for 2023".

Unsure how an online course can be oversubscribed unless there is an amount of manual marking and limited staff for that.

Or more like the limits of government funding has been reached for a specific geographical area.

  • Thank you for this idea. Being a cheapie I always wanted to take advantage of the free studies but I don't want to commit to something stressful. At the same time I have been waiting for work to organise some free trainings for us to learn Te Reo Maori as I didn't go to school here so I know nothing about Maori language. Thank you!
