Did you like that Macpac one, did you think it was good? If so, then get a newer, updated one. I'm a fan of supporting brands that I have found good products from, and getting them again. For the most part, newer products are improved on their predecessors

  • Northface or patagonia.

Don't go for nz crap brands they do not hold up.

  • I usually buy three layer jackets and prefer Goretex, though there are also decent lighter jackets that aren’t quite as hardy. I usually wouldn’t buy a “winter” softshell - you’re better off layering. It predominantly for winter use, wear your bottom layer when trying them on.

While it isn’t Goretex, the Patagonia Torrentshell 3L is usually a great buy, though not the most breathable and a bit more rigid. RAB and Marmot make great, affordable enough jackets, but they have a huge range - always worth checking clearance outlets or the discount rack at Bivouac.

  • Also think about what your intended use is. I needed one that could fold up compact. That I keep in my Backpack for when there is a chance for rain. For this I bought a Torpedo 7 one (cant remember the "type /model"). I also took one size bigger, which allows me to layer up underneath. Cant fault the T7 one, but again, I dont stay out in the rain for hours. I have about a 20min walk to office, and for that it keeps me dry.
