  • Will give it a go, currently I use Gmail for Calendar but Outlook for mail and that's a match made in hell.

I also use Microsoft ToDo, which is great, but Outlook insists I use Microsoft ToDo, which I do, but it won't let me connect my ToDo to Outlook because I don't have an email account on my Microsoft account, but I do have a random Hotmail account loaded for spam, and it forces me to use that.

Basically Microsoft is living up to the Magic 8 Ball "Outlook not so good".

So if I can get something that actually works, then I'm happy.

First impressions not so good, it's not really tasks and calendar in one, it's just a calendar. EG I can't add a task without specifying a time/date and how long it will take me, so I can't make, say shopping lists on it without it giving an annoying schedule.

But it's a calendar I can't sync with anything, it can import calendar entries, but I can't, say, put it into Outlook, so it's ANOTHER calendar.

Finally I can't add a new task from the widget, it just tells me my schedule. I have to go full on into the app to create a task, which I can't do by clicking on the widget except by clicking onto another task, but then I'm presented with that task.

It's just generally harder than Microsoft ToDo, without really adding any benefits, and doesn't fix my calendar problem.

    • What's wrong with Gmail for mail and Google Keep or Google Task for your tasks?

Google App Script is awesome and can link your Google services like Calendar and Gmail together for a bunch of automations. I use it to do a bunch of automatic archiving and deletion based on Gmail labels and filters. I set it up once and can apply it to all my other Google accounts. I also get to do a bunch of webhook calls as well.

I also have some python scripts that run automatically to backup my Google Task and Google Keep. Anything I add on Google Keep or Task can be added directly to my calendar as well as a todo reminder or event.

All of these things can also be linked directly into Alexa and Google Nest Mini or whatever device you have.

      • Google charges me to link up my domain(s), and I don't want an @gmail account.

I have 33 users, and 13 domains and Google would charge me $276USD/m what otherwise costs me $10USD/m.

        • I have a very similar issue across multiple domains (fewer than you) and users (more than you) - I had quite a few GSuite domains setup back when you could have up to 1,000 (or maybe it was 10,000?) users for free.

I'm considering moving everything to Microsoft and taking the dollar pain, but they do offer significant storage 'thrown in' which means I could ditch other paid storage, and consolidate everything in one place.

Plus I work in MS Office, not Google Docs, as productivity is so much better (faster) and Google can't handle some of the spreadsheet models I work on for clients.

Makes me die a little inside though, thinking about making all the changes…. hence I am still sitting straddling both, which is a most uncomfortable position!

@Alan6984: I run Mailinabox on a Vultr VPS, 1 core 2GB RAM + 55GB SSD has been plenty for 7 years now.

Absolute minimal maintenance for those 7 years, and only one extended planned outage (when I upgraded from Ubuntu 18 to 22). Server reboots at most other than that.

            That's where my $10/m goes.

I couldn't be happier with it as far as email goes.

I tried using the integrated NextCloud and dav for calendar but there isn't really any good support for it on Android. Google Calendar seemed to be the best bet for Android Calendar integration, but Outlook hates it and I have to run a rando FreeWare program called "Outlook Google Calendar Sync" which Outlook constantly flags as dodgy AF and I have to approve access.

            • @danvelopment: I was running my own MailServer (on a VPS running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS if I recall correctly) as well until a few years ago, but I forgot to pay one month, and they, most rudely, deleted it, and I haven't bothered restoring. Should have put my own VPS on the same process that I use for clients so that it would never get missed - I might go back to that option with a fresh install of Ubuntu 22.04LTS. I've never used MailInABox - how does it compare to, say, PostFix / DoveCot which is what I was using? Sounds like it is wanting to do everything for you - does it take all the fun out of it?

I also looked at NextCloud (itself, not part of MailInABox) a while back, but decided against it. Felt a bit like the old MS SBS bundled package, but I didn't get too deep into it.

Sounds like we both have a similar solution on the Android Calendar synchronisation - I've been using MyPhoneExplorer for maybe ten years now (hard to remember), which handles synching of calendar and tasks, gives me ability to read and reply to SMS on desktop (plenty of options for that of course), and syncs my contacts, plus it acts as a kind of backup of all that from my phone. It has never failed me yet….

  • my brain need somthing like this. Thanks
