  • Oh I didn't know you could expand storage using a hub. I bought a cheap USB c to ether net from Ali express but I'm yet to try it out.

"USB C hub for Chromecast… to expand storage "…..errr what ?

It acts like expandable storage for Chromecast with Google TV.

  • now im starting to think i got it wrong lol. But im sure i saw you can expand the storage by plugging in a sd card or external hard drive to a usb c hub

    • But what was the USB-c hub plugged into?

      • The Chromecast. You can also use a hub to connect a Chromecast via ethernet

  • into the chrome cast, then the chromecast gets powered from the usb c hub i believe

  • I got one of these (https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/aw/d/B06Y5N3YCD?psc=1&ref=ppx_p…) as I wanted to run Ethernet to my Chromecast, it's still on the to do list and haven't tried the USB plugs but the USB-C PD works.

    • There are way better hubs than that with cheaper price. Just saying

      • any suggestions please :)

        • Not really sure if normal usb-c hubs work with chromecast. I am still trying to understand what will plug into what? Tv, usbc hub, chromecast.

I received this Basues one last week, will try it out with chromecast and report back. If that works then any good Basues, ugreen or other good ones should work I think.

I also have this UGREEN USB C Hub with Ethernet Port, 7-in-1 for more than a year now and works perfectly with my WFH setup.

          • @ace310: Cool thank you. The usb c hub should plug into the chromecast power port. and then the chromecast into the tv as per normal

            • @dave8501: In that case you don't need hdmi port on the hub. A usb c pd hub with ethernet should work fine.

            • @dave8501: Got the Basues one working absolutely fine. Connected ethernet and usb drive. Both worked fine with google chromecast 4k. I can browse all folders on usb drive. So as mentioned above, any usb c hub with ethernet & pd should work fine.

Search for cheaper options on Aliexpress/amazon. Time to time they have coupons. Good luck.

              Few more yarns here

  • Anker USB C Hub, PowerExpand+ 7-in-1 USB C Hub Adapter

Is what I use. Added a micro SD card. You have to format it to FAT32 though, the cc won't recognise other formats

  • Can you play videos or movies off a usb flash drive that is plugged into the chromecast/hub?

    • I feel like if you were going to do this, then you can just plug the USB drive directly into the TV?

BUT I suppose not every smart TV has USB inputs ?

Although in saying that, every Smart TV I've owned in the last 10 years has had USB inputs.

    • Yes. See my comments above.

      • Cool thanks for confirming. Wasnt sure if it specifically included movies files.
Did you have to swap out the power brick for one with more wattage compared to the supplied one?

I think I don't have the official one as got the parallel import one from 1-day awhile back. But no, used the same one. I think it might be 1A rated.

  • Something like this will work, Chinese 8 in 1 for under $30

Personally I use it to stream game footage via network from the study to lounge, or watch movies via network share from LAN devices.
The lag is about ~50-80ms so fine for driving games but kinda bad for shooters.

Something else is to consider what is powering the Chromecast, and what the new power requirements will be for the hub+devices. If I recall the minimum is about 30W.
