Thoughts on Konic/Konka TVs, sold through NCP Group

Tempted to upgrade my nans old TV with a cheap WebOS or Android TV television from NCP group.

According to one comment on Geekzone from 2020

They've been around for a while; they basically just localize cheap stuff out of China.

$500 for a 50" 4K TV seems decent. The most she would do on it is watch live TV and YouTube. Maybe Netflix if I got it for cheap. Could try save some dosh by buying a factory second version for $400, but it only comes with a 12-month warranty.

  • Considering second-hand as well, but there's not much on Trade Me at the moment. She lives in the Bay of Plenty area. Alternative option is to finish setting up this 4K Chromecast I have and attach it to her old 40" TV. Bigger TV would be nice though.

  • 12 month warranty isn't / shouldn't be any issue if bought from a Nz retailer. CGA ! Pretty much ANY tv should last well past 12 months. 5 years would be a minimum for even the cheapest models I'd have thought.

    • As someone with a hell of a chip on their shoulder coming out of working for one of NZ's big electronics stores named after a guy… this is something that needs to be common knowledge across the board.

I saw a bottom of the barrel sony tv get covered 6 years out (albeit after a bit of a fight with this one).

But if you think that brands dont already have rules in place to comply with nz/aus consumer law outside of what 'warranty period' is advertised then you're kidding yourself. I know of at least 1 brand that just covers for 3x what is advertised anyway. The stores will harp on about warranty periods but they mean nothing to you as the consumer unless they offer things that are additional to the law.

Outside of things with concealed batteries having normal battery aging issues I wouldn't even question the applicability of cga until after 3 or so years and even then you're not exactly doing rocket science

  • We have used quite a few over the years. Konic have been slower to adopt new technologies and connections as well as slower to drop old technologies and connections. That was why we started using them - they still had VGA when everyone else had removed it. I would say they are as good a Veon. But veon has longer warranty.
