AirAsia reliable much?

Has anybody here flown with Airasia from Auckland to Kuala Lumpur or Bali? How was your experience? I wanted to book a holiday but am nervous. Can I expect flights to turn up and depart on time?

I have travelled with them a lot over the last 10 years. To be honest they are actually quite good for reliability. just be prepared for the no frills on board

  • The no frills I can live with, I just hope there not as bad as jetstar. Iv had no issues with jetstar personally but my friends and relatives have had lots of problems.

  • Travelled them from Tokyo to Perth a few years ago. Seemed like their strategy was to turn the cabin temp down as low as possible and then try to sell you a blanket. So pack a jumper. A few days before the flight they may email you an offer to upgrade for a fee to their business class or to have a guaranteed seat free next to you. I picked the latter and it was well worth it.

  • Had no issues on 10 - 20 flights with them. The usual minor delays, but nothing major at short notice.

This one was interesting: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/237610 Booked BNE > DPS return on their lie-almost-flat seats for under $300 AUD but that got cancelled about 6 months out when they canned all of their AUS - DPS direct flights so we ended up being routed through KUL and extending our trip for a week.

  • The actual flying part of Airasia is fine, you don't get anything though, not even water.
They do cancel flights on whim which was very annoying since I had to pay to change the connecting flights. Kinda forces you to buy the flexi-bullsh1t options.
They do not have a phone number you can call nor an email address. Only IM via their website for support.
Only had issues 10% of the time overall flying with them.

Flew atleast 30 times in Asia with them. The absolute budget airline with no frills but reliable overall.

That's long haul from here so would recommend bringing delicious snacks and a blanket and even upgrading to a leg room seat depending on budget.

  • Air Asia is one of the better low cost carriers. I used to fly their AKL- KL route several times a year pre-covid to access cheaper international flights from KL.
Yes it’s no frills, but it’s easy to download some movies to your phone and take your own entertainment. Also the food and drinks are SEA pricing so cheap by NZ standards. I actually quite enjoyed their meals and never minded paying $3-6 for a hot meal or $2 for a bottle of coconut water…. not sure if it’s still the same though.

The seats were a bit tight for my 6’3 partner but we could usually pay around $100 extra for the bulkhead seats - Be sure to check your specific flight on seat guru for which seats to avoid.

The only real negative I experienced was noise. If you have one of the planes where the seating arrangement changes to lots of 2 towards the back and you happen to be seated there - take noise cancelling headphones or earplugs. I forgot mine once and had ringing in my ears for days from how loud the engine was back there.

    • Can confirm the pricing for meals are typically 7$ and 2$ for 600ml water. Flew them 4 times last month and didn't run into any issues.

  • Haven't flown them in a few years but I never had a problem with them.

I remember being on a Gold Coast to KL flight years ago. Hadn't brought a jumper with me as I there was no need I thought - both the GC and KL are warm enough. Once onboard though they seemed to crank the cabin temperature down to its lowest setting and then came around offering blankets for sale. So pack something warm.

On another flight from KL to Perth they sent me an email a few days prior offering to guarantee two spare seats next to me for a small fee (the config is 3-3-3). This was well worth the money as the flight was pretty full and it allowed me much extra space. They would also send emails trying to upsell you to their version of business class. The cost of the upgrade would have ultimately put the cost on par with what you would pay with a full fare airline in economy class. I was on budget so never tried it out.
