Credit card fee for booking ticket

Is there any workaround for this?
I have got amex platinum so have to use it for booking tickets however every airline website charges atheist 50-80 buck as their fee for cc.

Any website that does not charge it? Does flight centre accept amex for payment without extra fee. Thanks

  • Go through a travel agent, and pay via bank transfer?

You might also get a better price as well.

    • Presume OP wants to pay with their Amex Platinum to activate the free travel insurance (assuming Platinum charge card), and to get the Amex reward points

      • Yes - My bad, sorry!

        • Yeah need to pay thru anex for travel insurance. Thanks

          • @scrappycoco: Amex plat airpoints T&C says

“Cover is effective when You pay the full fare for a Trip on the American Express Airpoints Platinum Card Account or with Air New Zealand Airpoints.”

So technically you will be covered. Only saw it after I booked my fare tho 😑

  • Looks like credit cards are on the way out, fees everywhere nowadays.

  • I booked my trip with Amex travel recently. Usually Amex travel is more expensive but in my case it was the best price I could find (same flight on booking.com was more than double of what I paid) and no additional credit card fee. Worth having a look.

BTW, flight Centre charges $150 per person per booking now.

    • Flight Centre has three different service fee amounts.

      $50 - Domestic flights
      $75 - Shorthaul / Pacific Flights
      $150 - Longhaul flights

      Charged per adult

  • I booked flights through Qantas website recently, pretty sure there wasn't a CC fee

  • Just have to pay it… All Airlines charge

@beatthatflight might be able to advise. We recently booked through an OTA via BTF and there wasn't a fee.

    • Thanks for tag. We don't charge a fee (get commission) but it'll depend on the OTAs, some absorb the cost, others charge extra.

Not sure if this would still give you the travel insurance but if you pay some of your Air NZ fare with Airpoints then you pay no credit card fee on the rest (true for Domestic and Trans Tasman at least). Note that Airpoints need to cover the full fare for a passenger to be used.

Theres no cc fees if pay some fares with airpoints, but at same time, you won't get any frequent flyer points either.

  • I bought tickets for a family of 4 to the UK recently using Trip.com travel agent. Never heard of them before, but the flights were approximately $2k cheaper than buying directly on Air NZ website.

That 2k cheaper was for exactly the same flights (AirNZ+Virgin codeshare) at exactly the same.

And no surcharge for Amex either (using PayPal linked to Amex card)

  • I had Air NZ fare credit which I used to pay less than 10% of a new ticket. Credit card was the only option on Air NZ site for paying the remainder and there were no credit card fees :)

    • No CC fees if part of the ticket is paided with credit
