      • damn how do you still have some left, 1 bag= 1meal for my kids

Here's a few cooking/serving suggestions from last time around: https://www.cheapies.nz/comment/164200/redir

I steam them off for 15 min, then shallow fry them. Put korean mayo, siracha n some chilli oil on top. Yummmmmy

      • First time hearing someone use mayo on these. I have some Kewpie so I'm down to try.

Can you clarify for me if you mix the 3 into a sauce or you drizzle (layer) them separately?

        • I keep experimenting with these and this is by far the best combo. Atleast i like it.. try n let me know.
Tip: make sure you take korean mayo (dont use the normal mayo).

Dumplings always stuck to my steel (not non-stick) pan when I steamed them first, so now I do the following after seeing this suggestion in the last Cheapies post:

      • Pan fry, from frozen, until lightly browned on one side. The dumplings may stick at first, but should detach (with a light push or flick of the pan) after sufficient frying.
      • Add around 5-10mm of water, cover, and steam until dumplings are translucent.
      • Drain remaining water, if any.
      • Add a little more oil, frying briefly until fried side is crispy again.
      • (Optional) Flip dumplings and fry other side until crispy.

I fry on high, steam on medium-high; half of the pack at a time, as that amount that fits cleanly in my pan. Overcrowding and rushing can lead to sticking and tearing of the dumplings.

    • Steam or boil them are best

    • +1

steam then panfry slightly, 3 x my kids only eat the pork prawn garlic flavour and no other brand dumplings for some reason

    • +1

I've tried the majority of the dumplings available in the supermarkets, and I find these ones to be the nicest by far

    • Pork and chive is great, I have never tried air fry, you could try and report back :)

  • Cheers for the heads-up.
Wow is it really $8.30 for Gregg's instant coffee and $4 for a 1.5L bottle from the Coke range normally?? Gregg's is one of the few instant decafs I think but we don't use it often, don't remember it being over $8 though.

      At countdown it is 🫠

the only ones they are fooling are the commerce commission, some of these specials are what the normal price is. the coke is at $2 at many Pns.

i always check how much since i caught them over charging me on several occasions with the bread and cat food.
      https://www.1news.co.nz/2023/02/21/are-you-being-overcharged…

      • 5 for $9 Coca Cola 1.5L at some stores too.

      • Paknsave and new world both had $2 1.5L cokes this week. I have seen it cheaper in a long time in my area

Yeah you really have to pick your spots with Countdown. Only buy the deals, if you do a full shop with them you'll lose out big time

First off, good deals, thanks OP.

Secondly a rant: These cheese blocks and other products used to be same price normally just 1-2 years ago. Now you can say well yeah but prices increased because inflation - well countdown and these supermarkets are the main reason inflation rose so high. Countdown has been jacking up prices of most products for past 2 years in the name of inflation even though dairy/oil prices have remained pretty much stable for past year and half.

So yeah, good deals, but just keep in mind that these are actually regular pricing that are being referred to as sales.

    • I'm actually surprised that the dumplings have remained around the same price. Does anyone know if the pack size has changed? I'm just going to assume that it's smaller than it used to be

      • +1

Looking through Cheapies history, bag size has stayed the same since 2021 but the price has gone up $0.60 (was $5.50 1/2 price).

        • Amazing. They still taste the same too

  • +1

I know some people say all the cheap cheeses are the same but with different wrapping but i got a couple of the mild last time and not a fan.

    • For clarity are you saying that find the mild is no good compared to other brand mild cheese? Or are you saying that you thought the mild, colby and edam are all basically the same? The latter is definitely wrong. I know someone said that the last time Countdown had $5 cheese but it was always a comment best ignored. They taste different and their textures are also different. Edam notably has less fat. Perhaps the taste difference is not as much as blue cheese vs any of them, but that's a different issue. And perhaps some people can't tell the difference but they're definitely different and I don't think you need some sort of refined experienced palate to notice. (Recognising which is which, that you may need some experience.)

      • I just meant mild countdown brand vs mild other budget brands.

        • Ah yes in that case I don't know. I haven't noticed any brand particularly different but it's nothing something I've really tried comparing

  • 10 packs of dumplings and 3 packs of shu mai later..
