Is Hyper Drive The Best Place to Buy New Tyres?

I'm based in Christchurch. Got a few quotes from different places for 225/55R18 Preium tyres. Hyper Drive stands out from the group. I bought 2 x Yokohama G058 from them for $438.77 two years ago and they're still going well. I'm almost about to place the order. But if anyone knows a better option, please let me know.

  • I used Hyperdrive just last week to replace my tyres and found it really good.
Their RRP are grossly inflated but I liked the fact there were multiple outlets to get them fitted and the process was quick and easy.

    • Yes, it's a bit like Briscoes in terms of RRP. But the price is still a lot lower than the good ones at Tony’s tyre. The makes from other vendors are pretty much unknown (Giti Control? Kumho?).

  • Tony's Tyres (in Auckland at least) will price-beat any quote by $10.00 so they should be the cheapest always.

I guess that might only apply to tyres that they actually stock though.

    • Tony tyres always tried to get out of price beat it's not worth the hassle of $10 saved, they also always try to get you to buy something different that they have higher margins on.

      • -1

Never happened to me - so clearly not 'always', but I accept it might be 'always' for you personally of course. Not sure I would bother going back multiple times like you imply you have if I was finding that, but your call.

I just show them the price I got quoted, and they beat it by $10 - really easy, no hassle.

        • Just talked to Tony's via their live chat. They're only willing to price beat the Dunlop tyres on HD with their Supercat ones, not the Bridgestone ones.

          • @xsolider: Yes - as above, they probably can't do anything with tyres they don't stock (or perhaps, have something very close).

Dunlop appear to be a good brand though, from what was posted by ThatKiwiFella.

  • I've always used Paterson Brothers in chch. Every quote I've had from them has been the same price as Hyper Drives cheapest price. And they're a small local outfit.

    • Have updated the main post with the quote from Paterson Brothers. Still not as good as HD, but thanks for the option.

  • +1

I always get quotes from Hyper with a coupon and price beat through Tony’s

You really want decent name brand tires (Bridgestone, Firestone(Bridgestones sister company), Yokohama, Dunlop, Pirelli). Stay away from the likes of Goodride, Triangle, Ling Long etc.

Remembering that tires are the only contact patch your vehicle has with the road, it’s worth getting better quality tires - they make a huge difference

  • I've always heard that yes, HD is the cheapest. Last year I needed some new tyres for my STI, and was looking at the Michelin Pilot Sport 5. Rang around a few places and hyperdrive was towrds the cheaper end, but was by no means the cheapest. I actually got the best deal directly through my mechanic, about $60 cheaper per tyre than HD

  • Last year I purchased new tires for one of our vehicles via Hyper Drive & chose a local installer to fit the tires - worked out well.

I recently needed to get new tires for our other vehicle & it worked out to be approx. $1000 via Hyper Drive. I contacted the local installer that fitted the tires last time & asked if it was worth buying the tires directly through them - ended up paying just under $900 (thus saving $100).

    • Yea. I would do this as well. Ask local installer if they prefer to order them instead of you.

      I've used hyperdrive before.

  • Ive used HyperDrive twice and both times was a quick and easy experience. Was quite a bit cheaper than other quotes using the discount code.
