E reader downloads

Hello
Just wondering if anyone has a great book download site that is cheap but has latest releases.
Apart from Amazon which is great but adds up in nzd.
Many thanks

  • Amazon do a load of free books, and many more for a few cents.

You can also get free e-books from many libraries - depending on your local library, and the format of your e-reader.

    • Second this. My wife and daughter use the Libby app and love it, I'm looking at getting them a Kobo which supports Libby downloads (Kindle does not). Tons of free books, many of them new.

Thirded! I have a Kobo and its brilliant- also bought one for my Mum and the library stuff is easy to use on one even if you are not particularly tech savvy. Also worth knowing is that you can easily reserve ebooks and sometimes also request that your library purchase an ebook if you want something thats not in their catalogue.

      • Kindle + Calibre can handle library books

        • Auckland Libraries appear to be different formats - is there a way of converting using Calibre?

          • @Alan6984: Yes, Calibre can convert to a suitable format. It's very easy once you get the hang of it

            • @Stoffel: Aren't the e-books from the library encrypted?

@Alan6984: They are DRM protected but Calibre has a plugin which strips the protection away.

There are a bunch of public domain books on libgen.is.

    • libgen isn’t just public domain, it’s mostly pirated content. Project Gutenberg is public domain.

      • You don't say.

  • Search it up but you can use libary then overdrive then calibre to get it onto your kindle

  • Use calibre to load ebooks onto a kindle.

The cheapest is the … free and illegal option and it totally works.

Also overdrive for public libraries, I have a kobo h20 and it's fantastic. I reccommend them over amazon

    Arrrr matey

  • Library rental of ebooks is good, but Amazon Kindle really need to open up Overdrive support to people outside the US.

  • Standard books has been great for actual public domain work https://standardebooks.org/

I like them because they’re also well formatted for kindle
