Best Baby Monitor

Just wondering if anyone has any experience in purchasing a baby monitor in NZ. What is a product you have owned that you would recommend? Many thanks

  • An old phone mounted near the cot using a car phone holder or similar and using WhatsApp, FaceTime etc is a perfectly adequate (and cheap!) alternative. Just mount the phone (very) securely, place the call and mute the mic on your end of the call. You can also just use voice calls, but make sure both ends are on speakerphone.

We've used this many times just with my wife's phone and mine when camping and travelling too, for piece of mind when the little ones go down while we relax away from the sleeping area.

I'd argue that this is equal or superior in quality to all but the top end of baby monitors (by which stage you're essentially buying a wifi phone-like device anyway), and it's more flexible and far cheaper.

  • We used a home security camera mounted on the ceiling above the cot.

  • Lollipop. Has been fantastic. Can view across mutiple phones, can add more if have more than one child. Alerts are great and can be set on DB level etc. You can take snaps and view a full timeline of events through the day/night. No subscription unless you want their full sleep tracking service.

  • Vtech.. cheap and reliable.. no need for internet to connect…about 80 bucks..

  • We have a basic audio-only Philips Avent monitor that we got off Trademe for about $20. Our daughter is three and still occasionally cries at night so it's handy for that.

When our kids were newborns we had a monitor with screen. I guess that was a bit more handy cos you could make sure they hadn't wriggled into an awkward position while they slept

  • The Eufy Spaceview cams off AliExpress. Big screen, clear camera quality and no need for wifi. Know lots of people given or purchased vtech ones who look to upgrade. General complaint is poor video quality and range.

  • I have two of the kogan smarter home cameras. one in my toddlers room, one in our babies room. we used 3M hooks to have it high near the ceiling. Only cost $50 each when on sale. It shows temp of the rooms. It can give notifications for audio alerts or motion alerts. It has night mode. If you insert a Micro SD card it will store footage to go back and play etc, which you do so all remotely using the kogan app.
I can put the kogan app into multiscreen mode where I can have both cameras showing at the same time, which we then put on a tablet and have on while we are in the lounge etc. Works good and no subscription cost when using the MicroSD option for storage.
