Broadband Deals and 2 Degrees Offer

Looking at changing broadband providers for a better deal (any recommendations appreciated) don't want a bundled deal.
Came across this from 2 Degrees, I year Amazon Prime and a $100 Prezzy card. Looking at the terms for the Prezzy card, to me
it looks like you have 30 days to redeem the card but it could take 28 days to arrive. Am I reading this correctly?

"$100 Prezzy Card: Must redeem card via gift portal within 1 month of Broadband activation. Card may take up to 28 days from redemption to be delivered. Standard prezzy card terms apply. Card is non-transferable or exchangeable and non-redeemable for cash. Broadband and Promotion T&Cs apply. See 2degrees.nz for full T&Cs."

I read it the other way around.

you have one month to redeem the card itself from broadband activation.
then it may take 28days from that redemption for the card to be delivered.

    • This is correct. You must manually redeem it online.

  • Have a look on broadbandcompare or glimp.

The cheapest I can see for my area by about $10/mo:

    https://www.broadbandcompare.co.nz/plan/unlimited-fibre-300-…

    Slingshot Unlimited Fibre 300(naked service)
$57.95 first 12 months then $89.95, 12 month term so you can leave when the price jumps.

The 2 degrees offer is the best one currently. I compared last week as my contract with skinny has just ended.

I am first joining electric kiwi to get 2 months free broadband, and the Netgear orbi wifi 6 router. You must have power to join broadband. Kind of oblivious to offer this with no contract.

I am hoping by then a better broadband plan shows up as I have no value for amazon prime video.

    • I like to use the free prime sub included with primevideo on twitch.tv so it costs amazon extra money and lines someone elses pockets too

      • +1

Yes, I was investigating whether I could make a twitch account and then use another twitch account to subscribe to my own, thereby giving me the money.

Ended up deciding I just don't want anything to do with amazon.

Also, unpopular opinion but I don't really like the thought of giving money to someone whose job is to stream on twitch. I know there are a lot of smaller creators who have a job outside and just stream on the side but I still don't like anyone earning money from streaming. Maybe that guy who was carving the poutokomanawa that became a meme. Found him: broxh

I did the same and also flipped the router on fb, essentially getting almost free power & broadband for a month or more.

      • Are you sure you can keep the router? I asked them about it and they said it's a rental only and has to be returned when terminating the contract.

        • I am sure from what the website says, but what do you mean you asked them?

          • @Bill: I asked them through their live chat system.

            • @coach: There T&C clearly states it's not a rental. Myself and my friend both did this without any issues. Their live chat team don't have much clue on broadband stuff. When I contacted them to confirm I will be receiving Orbi router, they said they only had netcomms router. They had no clue even if they provide Orbi router what a mess. I contacted again so that I could speak to someone else, and got different explanation. Orbi was only provided to high speed plan, which I subscribed to and he said he will have to check if that's also true or not. It's mess, but eventually everything worked out.

Remember, they have don't have any details on the account once you subscribe to the plan other than once you receive monthly bill which has just 1 line of broadband charge. No details on the usage or anything.

              • @ace310: I also vaguely remember a faq about whether the router needs to be returned and remember seeing it's yours to keep. Tried to find it again, but seems to have disappeared.

      • Hey @ace310, just curious as to how much you flipped the router for? I expect to flip one as well.

        • +1

          $90

      • Planning to change broadband service provider. I just want to confirm, still getting a free router?

        • Well it's still mention on their site e.g. https://www.electrickiwi.co.nz/broadband/

We’ll send a free Netgear Orbi RBR350 modem (valued at ~$250 RRP) if you need one.

As others have mentioned it seems to be free not free rental as no where does it say it's a rental that I could find. Other providers who expect you to return it always mention rental or something similar, this just says free. I don't see how you can say something is free without mentioning rental or the need to return it anywhere then expect people to return it fairly sure that would violate the FTA or something. That said I couldn't reach the broadband sign up page. It seems you have to finish signing up for power including entering a credit card or bank account details before they even let you see the broadband signup page.

          • @Nil Einne: Thanks, Nil, for your reply. I have signed up with EK and got the free router. I have confirmed with the chat agent that I can keep the router when I cancel my broadband plan.

    • I recently joined trust from ek as my power rate was slightly more expensive with ek.
Did a fibre+mobil+broadband bundle for a year contract, got $50 credit + 6 months out of 12 free for broadband, 2 months out of 12 free for mobile + monthly discount of $15+5 or similar for bundling

  • Has anyone tried skinny jump?

    • +1

I imagine it's mobile 4G service(not fibre) and it's pretty limited for data allowances(upto 210GB for $30/mo iirc). It's targeted so not open signups to everyone.

I'm sure the service itself would be fine but 200GB these days does not go that far if a household does a lot of streaming tv shows etc

    • +1

It runs on Spark's 4G network, and there's no difference in the quality of the service compared to other 4G plans. If you don't currently have any broadband at your place, then the product is designed for you. It's a subsidised service for people who wouldn't have internet otherwise. And you need to be referred to the service by a community organisation/hub or a budgeting advisor. Read about it here: https://www.skinny.co.nz/jump/about/

  • Is the router any good for kiwi electric? that seems like the best deal for me

    • It is a nice router. Not a good price for broadband, so it is only good short term.

  • Don't overlook Vodafone's fibre-x if available. Runs at about $70 per month, and while it's not fibre, I've found it to be the same speed if not faster than gigabit plans.

    • How did you sign up to this? I remember receiving a sales call about this, but it doesn't look available to me online. Pricing seems to be $63 or $73 for VOIP.

      • Might be address dependent. I just signed up online. Looks like they call it HFC now. Possibly because fibre-x was misleading.

        • +1

Hardly possible to be more misleading than naming something that is not fibre, using the word 'fibre'.

          • @Alan6984: It is partially fibre, and for the most part will be just as good as fibre max. It is not clear they are not the same, making it misleading.

“They must not operate under the assumption that consumers will make further enquiries to find out exactly what is being offered to them,”

        • They did rename it after the district court ruling but it's strange I can't get it when I remember a sales call for it.

only in wellington and Christchurch so why did I get a call in Auckland?

    • Iirc This is fibre to your local trrminal, then not fibre from the terminal to home. Speed depends on how far away you are from the terminal

      • Yes but average speeds are still pretty good.

      • Sounds almost the same as the old (A)(V)DSL.

        • Only real difference is that it is via coax cable rather than the older copper cables, which does mean the speeds are many times faster than DSL. "DOCSIS 3.1" will explain a bit about the technology that VF use.

          • @Kiwi: Why did they lay coax, when they could have laid fibre? Was it an experiment or something similar?

            • @Alan6984: It's the old infrastructure that Saturn/TelstraClear built.

  • It looks like Trust Power is doing 6 months free on a 12 month contract? Are they any good? Or do you also need to have power with them to get this?

When you join on an eligible power and broadband bundle for a 12 month term you'll get your first 6 months broadband FREE*

    • I did this recently and so far so good, i also bundled mobile so 2 months free out of 12, $50 credit and monthly bundle discount. I used to have vdsl and was happy with that speed but fibre is just wow, getting 2 digit download speed for torrent 👌

  • Is the 2degrees deal through broadband compare $65 for non 2degrees mobile customers or is it the same as their websites offer where it's $75 if you don't have a pay monthly plan?

It's not that clear and I don't really want to give them my details to get the sales call to answer this question.

I'm considering sticking with skinny and it means we can upgrade one of our plans from $16 to the $26 one essentially for free as we'll get the $10 back on the broadband plan.

    • Offers are different.

    • +1

Not a 2degrees customer, but went through BroadbandCompare to get the deal. I have received the $100 Prezzy and code for Amazon Prime. Price is $65/m for 12 months, no shipping as I brought my own router (which I didn't even have to reconfigure when the switch was made).

If not en existing 2degrees customer I believe you'd need to go through BroadbandCompare, but I only had one interaction with them - to fill out application to 2degrees. Now I only deal with 2degrees.

      • Did you get contacted by phone or email?

        • Contacted by phone. Essentially, you submit a request through BroadbandCompare to make contact and sign up for the deal with 2degrees. Just the regular questions, and no phone call since sign up, so no issues from my end.

      • Thanks that's good to know and I might take the plunge on it in a few days. Usually $65 is for pay monthly customers only and I've no desire to add $20 to either of our phone plans for data we don't need.
