Best deals to buy AA batteries

Hello all

Where is the cheapest place to buy AA batteries? Don't really care too much for quality, just want quantity / best bang for buck type deal.

Could also go down the reusable route by buying Eneloops from NL using CSC membership

One anecdote, but a fair bit of history: I've bought lots of different brands in there past including a set of these with accompanying charger. The Energizers were good for a while then they started crapping out after maybe 10 recharges / 1 year. I can't conclusively say whether it was poor quality battery or poor quality charger or both, but others died in a similar timeframe or even less.

Compare that to Eneloops from 7 years ago that I've always charged with a Liitokala charger, they are largely still going strong after well over a hundred charges, only a few are starting to die now. That works out to about 4c per battery charge, versus 10-20c for a 4 pack of Energizers. And the Eneloops are higher capacity.

I sound like a Panasonic sales rep, but: just buy Eneloops. And don't use bundled chargers, I'm pretty sure they're mostly crap, get a good one. Nitecore and Liitokala are good and not too expensive, both available on AliExpress.

      • I second this. Eneloops with Nitecore or Liitokala or Astrolux charger will be the best choice for long term. It might feel expensive upfront but eventually it will outlast anything else until something better than Eneloops come out.

Trade Depot have packs of 20 alkaline AAs for $5, AAAs for $4. No idea on quality, probably rubbish but much cheaper than any Evereadys you'll find at the supermarket.

Having said that, if you go through a lot I second the idea of getting Eneloops with a good charger (important). They're expensive but they make up for themselves many times over. Don't buy any other rechargeables.

    • The Trade Depot batteries are decent quality.

    • Second vote for me on trade depot batteries being actually quite good.

The Varta 30 pack at bunnings for $16.8 ($15.12 using powerpass) is always a safe choice
    https://www.bunnings.co.nz/varta-aa-alkaline-batteries-30-pa…

used to be $15 but still great price compared to other batteries

Philips batteries currently cheap at PB tech

    • The Vartas are simply the best value batteries out there, not the cheapest but close to it. They're quite well made and so they're fairly resistant to leaking.

      • Yep, I get confused at Eveready's and energiser's prices specifically being over $1 each but the Varta's are made in germany.

I went the Eneloops route and have no regrets

  • Is eneloops better than energizer maxi rechargeable?

  • I believe Ikea and amazon batteries are eneloops.. although not japanese made eneloops.

I also saw a deal on Ozbargain a while ago for bulk buying copper tops via Amazon au

Also worth mentioning that 1.2 v rechargeables are very different performance characteristics to 1.5v alkaline

  • I have been running amazon basics (when I don't use eneloops) from amazon.com.au . They are regarded to be high quality too.

Free shipping if your order is over AUD49. So as an example 2x 100 pack of AA's is NZD91.64 (incl gst), or 45.8c each. Various pack sizes available.

As per other people commenting, I am a big fan of eneloop rechargeables. I used NiMH rechargeables in my childhood, and ultimately gave up in favor of disposables. Got some eneloops pros for my high-end camera flash, and they are game-changing. In high draw applications, they will easily outperform disposable's. Now have a heap of AA and AAA eneloops and an 8 bay charger (BG-CC63 from europe via ebay). And adapters to fit them into C and D cell items.

Still useful to have some disposables around for things where you won't be getting the batteries back, and things where you know disposable batteries will last years.

  • Last time bought 20AA + 20AAA for $8 from Crackerjack, I think it goes on $10 atm. It can be 40AA etc, basically 2 packs for $10 everyday. Brand is Kodak, nothing wrong with quality. In fact, I used to use rechargeable batteries. Found annoying if I charge them in advance to standby, by the time I need to use them, they gone weak or flat. I have to change like 4 each time for door lock.

Modern low self discharge rechargeable batteries like Eneloop are game-changing in terms of standby life.

  • Can say the kmart batteries are absolute trash!
I originally thought it was my devices just draining them out, but switched to eneloop and everything last longer.

We have a kitchen scale with 3AAA batteries that I used to replace every month; swapped to eneloop and I havent charged/charged it in over 8 months…
