edit: ye ya learn something new everyday, apparently it's ok to put 98 in a 91 ride (but not the other way round)
It's the opposite, 98 in a 91 car = less HP (just). Which will technically mean better fuel economy since you can't run it so hard.
Higher Octane = harder to ignite. Which is important for high compression (high performance) engines as compression can cause ignition, before the spark plug fires (which is exactly how a diesel works).
Good spot Matrixx. :) I understand most times when you get these sudden and odd super low pump pricing, often on just one fuel type grade, (98 petrol this time) at just one station. Then it's due to them getting that particular fuel grade supply tank fully empty, in order to be ready to receive their scheduled tanker full up delivery this evening.
(PS: And it's an early gull day 2morow for this month of October. Yee ha !. Glad I didn't use my Caltex app 12 cent super pumped offer yet!).
When Gull Wiri wanted their tanks empty for refurbishments, there were super long queues because fuel was 49c

You’ve described pre ignition. Which is really bad but not that common. Detention/knock is unstable combustion after the spark plug has fired, meaning areas of the fuel/air mixture are spontaneously combusting before the flame front has reached them. Which normal happens from excessive heat and/or pressure.
Detonation is quite common and can be corrected for with delaying ignition timing. Pre ignition is hard to detect and no correctable (without cutting fuel). But pre ignition will quickly cause catastrophic failure.

About 10 cars pulled in but the 98 pumps didn't have any fuel
