  I concur, good airline.
  But I think some (if not most) of the cheaper tickets will need transit via Brisbane, Australia.

  This is the message I get on China Airline website after selecting dates:

  To/From New Zealand flights will en route via Australia (Excluded CI059/CI060 direct flights).
  Please make sure you travel with valid transit visa if required.

  Even though with the filter "direct" on the beatthatflight.com.au, the flight labelled as shown is CI053/54, which the official website China Airline is saying it is transit flight.

  Good deal nonetheless considering how expensive the flight tickets are these days.

    Yep. All China airlines from Auckland to Taipei transit at Brisbane. Transits are usually around 2hrs, which makes it probably around 3 hrs longer flight than direct.
    The only direct flight is Air NZ/ EVA Air which is around 11 hrs.
