Has anyone had experience in buying fresh oysters online?

Looking for fresh half-shell oysters, not the no-shell ones in a container. Hard to find them in the supermarket now. I'm wondering if buying online is a good option?

  • If you are in Auckland you could drive out to Clevedon Coast Oysters but even they only have limited stock of super jumbo's….

Just like the seasonal vegetables, I presume this is the wrong time of year for fresh oysters?

  • Ah you're right! Just did a quick research and the oyster season is from Mar to Aug. We just missed it…

    • They’re still available?

Got some half-shells from Matakana Oysters last Saturday. They also had XL jumbo ones - they were massive and plump. Seemed well stocked for this time of the year. Unfortunately, don’t think they deliver..

Are you in Auckland? I’ve ordered from another place, Black Shag Oysters, but they only do whole shell. Easy enough to open if you buy an oyster knife and watch a video or two on how to open them!

      • I think most nz oysters are from the north island. That's a shame.

        • If you’re specifically after Bluff oysters then, yes, the season is shorter and has ended. Pacific oysters have a longer season and are more readily available (mostly farmed around the North Island).

      • Is this free shipping?

        • No, I think shipping is based on how much you buy and where you're located.

I've also ordered from Mahurangi Oysters in the past and they occasionally offer free shipping (not recently though), but often do discounts around holidays/special occasions.

There's also Cowan Bay Oysters who deliver a sack of five dozen whole-shell oysters for $70 and I think shipping is free if you're in Auckland.
