Frank Energy putting LPG prices up

Time to look for a new supplier I guess, was $120 per refill and $10 per month

Let’s be frank - nobody likes prices going up. Like many other NZ industries currently facing the rising cost of doing business, our costs to supply and deliver LPG have increased in the past year. While we’ve held off passing on these costs to you as long as we can, we now need to adjust our prices.

Our new standard prices :
LPG bottle refills will cost $140 per bottle inc GST.
LPG Bottle Rental (2 bottles) will be $12.50 per month inc GST.

  • Yeah, matagas also just put their prices up, but are still cheaper. Their service isn't great (order a bottle as soon as it runs out because it can take weeks to arrive) but they're the cheapest I found so 🤷🏻‍♂️

  • Thanks for the heads up - that is a big jump. Haven't had an email from them yet but now am forewarned. We currently pay $104 per bottle (used to be $99) and $10 per month gas bottle rental. We also have electricity with them.

    • It looks like they have removed the monthly fee though. So potentially it could be a saving if you don't use much gas? I however have not had any email about this change, but logging in, I can see the new prices.

      • We use 4 bottles a year - if they remove the rental of $120 p.a. but the price goes up $35 a bottle I guess we'll be paying ~$20 more per year total.

        • +1

I guess that isn't too bad considering that is less than inflation. Gas prices have apparently risen due to the war. I just hope they drop them back when the price drops.

          • @nzmax: "If you've got your power account with us for the same address, we'll waive the monthly bottle rental fee - saving you $150 per year" - only for people who also use their power?

            • @akrotohur: Yes, it is only if you have both with them, which is what the OP stated he had. I think only the bottle price got discounted if you had both with them, as I was still getting charged a monthly fee. But I think their communication has been poor, I still haven't had any notification about this change. . They don't seem to reply to emails either, at least not in a timely manner.

  • Rockgas (via Contact) is going up too, on 1 Oct :(
I haven't looked at other options yet. If I drop Gas from Contact my broadband will go up $5 a month. I think we get a new bottle every 2 months so it's about $102 extra vs $60 savings on the broadband. Around $10.70 a month for the 2 bottles. Time to find cheaper gas.

    Product description
    LPG 45kg Bottle
    Current price (excl. GST)
$110.43 Per Bottle ($126.99 inc GST)
    New price (excl. GST)
$125.22 Per Bottle ($144 inc GST)

    • Where are you based?

For me in west auckland, the new price I will be paying is $116.52 excl GST ($134 inc GST). I don't have anything else with Contact. Only rockgas.

I think everyone is raising price for gas. Not sure if there will be enough savings by changing them now.

      • Dunedin

    • you should see what trustpower will charge you, iirc cheapest in Dunedin

  • Thanks, this is useful to note - will have to shop around again and make sure we're getting the best deal. Interestingly, I was curious to see what I was quoted when entering my current address into Frank Energy's calculator. While it reflects the new pricing, it does have a note at the bottom: "No bottle rental applies if you have electricity at the same address. 2 bottle connections only."

If this is the case and not an error, this actually would offset the price increase for my household as we're relatively small users (1x 45kb bottle every 4-5 months, only used for hot water and not other forms of heating).

  • Anyone used switchme to compare?

Email or phone only, a bit old school

  • It looks like they have removed the monthly fee though. So if you don't use much gas, you could be making a saving. I only use it for hot water, but often shower elsewhere, so hardly use any gas at all.

      • If you have both electricity and gas with them.
    • Agree, just went through the data during a boring meeting and found I use a 45kg gas bottle on average every 135 days - 2.7 (3) a year. Similar use case to you - hot water only. The cross over point of more/less per year is between 3 and 4 bottles.
