Buying New Tyres within 1 year: how to get the best deal ?

My last WOF come back with tyres low … So I basically have 1 year to get some new one for my Prius V

What is the best way to get good deals ? Knowing that I have time and can monitor the market a bit …

Edit: i am interested in fuel efficient tyres

  • I heard Costco when it opens

  • Hyperdrive.

Why wait up to a year? Buy them when you NEED them.

  • Where are you based?
You can hold out for the buy 3 get 1 free deals (few on at present)

I found my preferred tyre shop was able to offer a sharper price than hyperdrive (while being an authorized fitter for them).
Hyperdrive take a cut of the deal, personally prefer to support the tyre shop direct.

  • I usually call around the local tyre shops and ask what they have in my size and give a rough price range. Then go with whatever seems like the best deal based on online reviews

Tony's do price beat for same tyres. But as above, call around to get prices. I wouldn't buy online and then to get the fitted at extra cost. Too much hassle as well.
Also depends on what type of tyre you're looking for, high quality or cheapie.
Normally the price difference isn't much between competitors, maybe $10 max per tyre.

    • So not so much price difference …

      • So for 4 tyres then Tony would be cheaper than whatever quote you have got. Also they offer free tyre rotation and free puncture repair as well.

(would be a good idea to get some discount for wheel alignment (via supergold card etc)_ so you can get the best deal possible as a package. Having 4 new tyres mean you also need wheel alignment

    • No comment on the price comparisons but what you mean by too much hassle? When I ordered at Hyperdrive all I had to do was select the fitting location and time on their website. There was a minor problem since my selected time wasn't available at the store, one problem may have been I ordered fairly late in the day so they didn't try to set it up until tomorrow, also I was in a rush so was ordering on Wednesday evening for a fitting on Friday morning. In any case, it still wasn't a big deal, they called me on Thursday morning and told me and said they could do it in the next hour on Friday which was fine with me. I got there at the designated time, gave them my order ID or whatever and the store fitted them. Found out Hyperdrive sent one of the wrong tyres somehow (store had noticed when they arrived yesterday since one of them was different) but they still got the replacement in time such that it didn't really delay anything or maybe at most 10 minutes or so. In the OP's case it doesn't sound like there should be any rush so they can set it up for a week or so in the future and in that case it seems unlikely there'll be any problems with appointments or tyres not arriving. I've done Tony's before and frankly ordering from Hyperdrive was simpler and quicker.

  • Hyper drive..

I had my WOF done and was also told that I'll be needing to get my tyres changed soon. I was quoted quite a bit for Chinese branded tyres and fitting + disposing tyres are also extra costs.

found that Hyperdrive has a good baseline for knowing what brands and tyres usually sell for (i try to find a middle ground between rrp and sale price)

Once I knew what brands would be good, I then emailed and messaged lots of tyre shops near me and made sure to get quotes for 2 tyres and 4 tyres.

I was able to see where I can go that had the cheapest service (was able to get 2 brand name tyres fitted and get old tyres disposed of) All in all I paid about the same price as what was quoted for me for the chinese brand tyres

Also make sure to use google reviews and other review places to see if the tyre shop you're going to has good reviews.

This was back in January so I'm not sure if tyre prices would fluctuate based on months

tyres are good for growing potatos btw. I always keep mine for growing potatos in

    • Sounds like a plan but are you really sure it’s safe and healthy?

  • When it comes to tyres. Hyperdrive no brainer

    • I could not find my cheapie tyres on there recently, and their fitting fees seem to have increased, may be a good idea to shop around now. I found my tyres on Trade Me.

      • I had the same problem, they don't seem to sell 205/55/r19 but found them at the brick and mortar stores (ended up getting a deal at Bridgestone Tyre Centre).

I used Hyperdrive with my last car and it was a pretty good experience.

Are Michelin Pilot Sport 4's still the best choice for street tyres?

    • +1

      Yep

    • Confusingly there is both: Michelin Pilot Sport 4 and Michelin Pilot Sport 4s.

Michelin Pilot Sport 4 seems like you get a good balance of performance and tread life.

Could run a price for a set of Bridgestone RE003, not quite as good, but still quite respectable summer performance tires and generally cheaper.

Obviously these are both ultra high performance street tires, dialing back to a nice touring tire like the Michelin Primacy 4 will give a lot longer life, at the expense of some grip.

[edit] Pilot Sport 5 is out, not sure if any stock has landed in NZ yet.

      • He has a Prius. He has no need for PS4’s or RE003’s. He needs a good street tire, not a top of the line performance tire

        • You are probably correct, just to clarify I was asking for my own situation

        • You can never have too much grip! Potentially around town they are overkill, but on the open road there's benefit to be had running them. Never skimp on a safety item.

          • @limepanda: Re003s and PS4s are high performance tires designed for high performance driving. A Prius isn’t getting close to needing tires like these. I have RE003s on my gtr and even my turbo Legacy has Ecopias and hasn’t come close to under steering.

Something like a Pirelli P6 which can be had for around $650/set is a far better suited tire for the drivers needs

It’s not about ‘more is better’ it’s about what tire is suitable for the application

            • @ThatKiwiFella: Are you saying a prius isn't capable of travelling outside of cities? Our whole country is twisty roads and I've seen way too many people crash on cheap tyres.

The bottom line is that your Ecopias have much less grip than RE004s or PS4s. They won't stop as well, they will break traction easier, they will hydroplane at lower speeds, and have less traction in the wet. (Keep in mind that Ecopias are designed to be fuel efficient, which means they are a hard compound which directly sacrifices grip for less rolling resistance. Conversely a sticky tyre means more grip and safety).

Performance is directly correlated to safety when it comes to tyres.

I tend to agree that you can usually find an acceptable compromise (I like the Pirelli Dragon Sport as a cheap reasonably performing tyre), but the original poster asked what the Best tyres are, not what the best compromise tyres are.

Im really concerned only 1 other person has mentioned this

Just because you passed your yearly WoF doesn’t mean you have a year to find tires.. Your tires need replaced as required and if they’re low that’s not going to be in a years time

Tires are the only contact patch between the road and your vehicle. Stop being concerned about the cost and worry more about your own, and other peoples safety and for the love of god, don’t get the cheapest tires money can buy

    • I saw something online about swapping tyres with a mate to pass wof and then put them back on.

      • Running sub 1.5mm tires is illegal. Police and even sometimes parking wardens will issue fines. And it can get pretty dangerous in the wet.

That's probiably the bigger issue than getting a WOF.

        • Yeah, I know but some people just don't care.

      • Extremely common in some circles, but very stupid and short sighted.

    • I understand your point
But it's a spectrum. It's not like tomorrow, suddenly your tyres are dead.
It's start to be low so i start shopping. And as a cheapies, try to get good deal.
A bit like waiting for Black Friday to buy a new hard drive …

      • Except you’re not driving around a hard drive with your family in it alongside other peoples family

You’ve worded it exactly how I’ve called it out.. “I basically have 1 year to get some new one”

Tires aren’t the stock market mate, they’re a relatively standard price and every big company has a ‘Buy one get one half price’ or ‘buy 3 get 1 free’ at least monthly

Hyper Drive have 40% off at any given time, they don’t stop this promo

        What size are your tires?

205/15/17? Set of 4 Pirelli P6’S fitted and balanced is $762 at Hyper. Price beat at Tony’s for another $40 off

205/50/16? Set of 4 Yokohama ES32s are $815 fitted and balanced. Price beat at Tony’s for another $40 off

I understand not wanting to pay more for something when you can get it cheaper elsewhere, but that’s not how you worded your post and that way of thinking is what’s wrong with many drivers

        • Yes, sorry. My initial post was too short and badly worded.

Tires aren’t the stock market mate, they’re a relatively standard price and every big company has a ‘Buy one get one half price’ or ‘buy 3 get 1 free’ at least monthly

That's very good to know !!

Hyper Drive have 40% off at any given time, they don’t stop this promo

          So, a la Briscoes …

          What size are your tires?

205/60R16 92V Yokohama, came with the car.

Do those fuel efficient tyres worth the trouble ? I bought some fuel efficient tyres some years ago and my memories failed me which one was it. They did not last long !

  • Hyperdrive tyres are on sale at the moment.
